This is not so. Of the large number of reefs and islands, none of the proper inhabited islands are held by the CCP. The CCP has only two islands and they are both fake, having been constructed on top of reefs.

We just don't have a ship[ numbers tp spare for running around doing FONOPS like the Pacific Fleet does. We should be working to very quickly build up massive defence bases in areas such as PNG and Timor and have a couple of ships permanently stationed there as a sort of initial intervention/QRF if things kick off.

Agreed. As much as what the CCP is doing is wrong, it isn't our territory and we are not a policeman. If the local nations (Phillipines, Vietnam, Malaysia) aren't sailing with us to do it, we shouldn't bother. We have no economic play in this. Strategically it will matter in the long term, but again unless the locals stand up, any efforts by Aust/US/anyone else become meaningless.

Why would the locals stand up? The CCP has been spending big money in the area, adding to their economy.
Investing money in your neighbours is absolutely a form of warfare. But we have tons of people here screaming over the 0.2% invested in foreign aid. "HELP EVERYONE AT HOME BEFORE SENDING MONEY OVERSEAS". How many times have we seen that opinion expressed?

China is a little more strategic with their money than us. The prefer loans to aid. It works well for them. They gave a massive loan to Tajikstan which they knew would not be repaid. To 'forgive' the loan, Tajikstan ceded around 1500sqkm of its territory to China. They also now have troops stationed in Tajikstan. Far cheaper to act as a loan shark than to use military force. It's a tactic China continues to use.

The British empire took 1/3 of the earths surface away from local inhabitants in exchange for ... um... yeah. And that included Dutch, French, Ottoman and German colonies too.

The last time the US did that was in WWII and they had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the conflict. They also subsequently held referenda for the territories that they took off Japan to see what they wanted to do. That's 75 years ago. Since then the US hasn't annexed anything.
