Makes you wonder what the next moves will be - as the article says - Xi won't back down, so what are his options??

Error in the article. It was Somaliland (unrecognised separatist state from Somalia) who kicked out the CCP diplomat, not Somalia.
Interestingly since they aren't in the UN, the CCP has no leverage to stop them from recognising the Republic of China. The usual CCP threat of severing ties with any country who recognises the RoC holds little meaning for a country that isn't recognised either.
