Firstly, here's hoping it never happens, but,
if we were involved in a shooting match with China, how would it affect us in our daily lives?? What preps do you have that would assist you? Where do you think you might need a top up?

Very pertinent questions. Its also worth considering what effects you will feel if we (& the US) are at war with China over the South China Sea / Taiwan. i.e. we my not feel directly threatened by direct military action on the Australian mainland, but ..
Goods manufactured in China will become unavailable as will goods which rely on parts nanufactured in China.. thats a lot of goods in 2020. Shipping of fuels and goods in general will be disrupted. China will employ cyber attacks on Australia and the US disrupting finance, commerce and services in general in an attempt to cause unrest and panic and stir up anti war rhetoric in the population.
If it happened this year I'd be in a hurry to secure solar power related systems we intend to purchase.
I'd also boost our fuel holdings and ensure we have extra cash on hand.
Food & building materials should be not so difficult to obtain. We'd already be good for water and farming supplies.

Fuel will be the first thing felt, as the defence force would prob snap up any fuel tankers off shore and any reserves on shore while our existing fuel refineries are taken out of mothballing and put back into production. The will follow the agricultural sector, as with no fuel avail at first to harvest crops and truck to market will lead to mass food shortages in the supermarkets. With no fuel and food quickly running out, social unrest will be the next step, the military will be tied up with combat readiness to be called upon to assist the police with social disturbances and rioting in the streets. Add to this what MS said about the cyber warfare adding to the economic and business distress in the early days (might even see mass communication disruption in the days/weeks leading up to the first shot being fired as a preemptive by the commies to start us off on the back foot)

I know we have an agreement with the Yanks for fuel, but what's to stop them using it themselves??? Also, is this fuel stock already refined? or does it need to be?

Transportation by bicycle become immensely popular. The quality of city air improves. FIFO workers become remote community residents.
Agricultural productivity takes a savage nose-dive. Wild fish stocks recover as the export markets for what we harvest and export dry up.
Smart phones become paperweights if the data network gets smashed by cyber attack.
Everyone on life sustaining meds finds themselves in deep trouble. Even if meds get made and sent from the US the track record of US pharma companies indicates they will be 20-100 times more expensive.

I would suggest everyone now focus on a full stocktake of anything you regard as "vital resources and infrastructure" then start a purchasing programme for the important support / consumables required to maintain this gear! Belts, Air Filters, Oil Filters, Critical Spare Parts, lubricants, rotating stock of fuel etc, etc. All the rest of the "stuff" is not so important we've got massive fat in this country / private ownership to keep us going for decades! How many knives do you need? Probably two or three, but like in my kitchen, hunting rig and farmshed I could count thirty or more!! How many hammers do you need maybe 2 or 3 I'd probably have ten, how many compasses do you need? Probably two but I'd have like six!
Barter and private selling online and in community markets and car boot sales is going to be back bigtime if the shit really hits the fan!.............. Yes and I know I'm preaching to the converted!

Smart phones become paperweights if the data network gets smashed by cyber attack. I think you're right about the other stuff but not this. Smartphones can charge from batteries, small solar panels, residual power from car USBs. We might not have spare parts for them, but while they work, they will be mp3 players, cameras, calendars and ebook readers to keep us sane while adjusting to our collective information umbilicals being cut. I can imagine micro-SD cards with APKs, comics, info and fiction ebooks, funny photos and reports getting traded around like the old gameboy game cartridges did in primary schools a long time ago. Also there's mesh apps that allow you to chat over bluetooth and p2p on the same wifi network (like Apples Bonjour proticol or apps Matrix, Briar, Tox or Echo which work without needing a server but can be basic and difficult to use.) If you can't root iphones then they'll be much more limited but android P2P apps will probably be a big deal in inner city areas.
