OK... So... I'm an admitted "black thumb" when it comes to growing things.. But I do the work and run the machinery for Sweetie who could grow most anything just with the warmth of her smile...
British Columbia is long and narrow, with the mountains running the long way, so the plant zones tend to be long and narrow also.. Some what at least.. Our nearest metro being Pot Hole City in the river bottom is listed as growing zone 4.. I believe that depending what side of the river bottom you are on, depends if you get the most sun light the earliest in the day..
We are about 500 meter higher on the plateau, in the bush, about 30 km out.. We are in a band of zone 2.. By the statistics we are a solid zone 2, not even close to being able to claim even zone 2a... Our zone 2 averages, like clock work, 55 days between last frost date and first frost date..
The bugger of the deal is, 500 km west of us, on the ocean by the US Alaska border on the inside passages they are zone 8....
- - - - - - It appears Aus if 6 zones, with a very small area of zone 1 and 2, I presume mountains.. With the bulk of the country zone 3 - 6... That about right ??

Tim what zone maps are you referring to? I use the diggers maps and most of Oz is 80% zone 7and above.

Lucky until you factor in our predominantly ancient and starved soil. In stating that our farmers are awesome innovators and i think at one stage led the world in conservation tillage and using heavy cracking clay soil to it’s full potential. Some of the best market gardens i have seen have been in desert environments like broken hill and Charleville, zones 10-11. The arid areas along the Murrumbidgee and Murray are wonderful producers of a wide variety of food. We just need water.
