Is there a mouse plague developing in central nsw? Been hearing some whispers about it - but nothing of note in the news...
just a little curious.

I dont like cats as pets, but as a farm animal you cant beat having a few moggies around for pests like mice.

There has been a mouse plague in the QLD Southern downs region so I wouldnt be surprised if it has expanded into NSW.

I grew up in the Riverena area. Even when there wasn't a mouse plague, there was a mouse plague. Barn cats and jack russels/foxies get fat round this time of year. Chooks too, if they're inclined.

Its interesting that this thread popped up.
I spent yesterday laying out mouse baits all around the home block sheds (I'm Rural SA). We are getting some intruding into the house for the first time in four or five years.
We have a couple of cats but they can't keep up.

Same thing over in Victoria, either they are getting more confident to be out in the open or there are a lot more of them.

Here in the bush.... with livestock.... I routinely have mouse issues that peak spring and fall... Not much in winter and a lower level of activity in summer..
I have been able to keep up with the invasion with snap traps.. I keep a fair number on hand to be able to have several in each building.. All modified to be a more secure hold when an animal is trapped.. And a tether on the trap so any other animal can not make off with the trap and I can't find it.. I routinely find a trap pulled away out of site and has to be retrieved with the attached string and anchor.. The culprit having consumed the trap contents..
I've found you need to be resourceful, diligent, and persistent at this.. So far it has worked well.. Knock on wood..

Oddly, both of the major supermarket chains here have stopped selling rat traps. Not empty shelves, just not selling any more.

Bought them in packs of 6 from the local feed merchant, Norco I think. Baited with peanut butter or a seed of some kind.
If you push something hard enough, it will fall over.

I have for years used comercial rodent bait stations on all my properties and ill never not do it i even have 6 deployed on my block now they work well and are as safe as you will get. i remember one year there was a mouse problem and every farm around me had mice invading everything including chicken coops but i didnt because at the time i had 30 of those bait stations deployed around the property so i was getting them before they reached the farm and built up in numbers that were a problem your local rural suppl shop should have them in stock heres a link pestcontroldirect.com.au/shop/product/ratshot-rapidkill-rodenticide-blocks-2kg/

+++ Interesting.... Maybe as simple as a too low volume product.. The shelf space better used. ++++ Being a retired tool and die maker... And a mouse trap mechanic of sorts.. I bought a package of 6 rat traps from Russia for cheap out of curiosity.. They are a conventional looking snap trap made of all stamped blank and formed all steel parts... To a tool and die maker, they are the most God awful crude metal working you ever seen.. Absolutely pathetic.. With the crudest dipped black paint finish you ever seen.. Just awful, awful..
However with a bunch of tweaking and careful bending of parts they can be made sensitive and reliable..
There is a guy who posts mouse trap videos, called Mouse Trap Monday... He has some interesting designs and many antiques..

Bait station stays outside, rats or no rats.

Being careful of course not to rough it's surface else you'll lose that sensitivity. Interestingly, since I put them out, the Indian Mynahs will not set foot in my yard, despite not having caught any. Animals seem to know when they are being hunted.

Ive been trying a type of trap that catches the rodent in a square tube, which is balanced with an open flap at one end. When the little s..t goes in to feast on the peanut butter, the tube falls back, closing the door and trapping it. Then you can ley it go, feed t to the chooks or drown it etc. They seem to work well and the beastie doesn't suffer with a broken back etc as in conventional traps.
I'm here for moral support, ignore the gun.
