This happens on a semi-regular basis. It's not well understood though, but studies have shown that the earth's magnetic field is steadily weakening, which may be a precursor to the reversal. The reversal isn't a problem, it's the zero point when there's little/no protection from solar radiation that is bad. If this were a permanent thing (clearly it isn't) it would be enough strip the atmosphere away and sterilise the planet. This is assumed to be what happened to Mars, which lost it's magnetic field 3 billion yrs ago.

Dammit will I have to flip my solar panels? ... J/k

If our aborigines got through this event with their technology then it should be a doddle for a modern prepper.

Although ... we might revert to a pre-satellite world for a while. I assume our magnetosphere protects all the near earth orbit satellites? And that they will be fried without its protection?
And what happens to electronic signal transmisions? Does lots of cosmic radiation reaching earth act like a global jammer? Does this mean military's heavily dependent on signals and data transmission find their capabilities greatly diminished? Will a war under these conditions revert to the ye-olde formula for success? Sheer numbers of men and material using dumb weapons systems?
Does Pine gap become obsolete if electronic signals become badly compromised? It only exists to transmit and receive data. And with Pine Gap becoming redundant ... does the US have any real reason to defend Oz against aggression from neighbours with Waaaaaaay more men and material and dumb weapons than we could ever hope to muster?
Food for thought ... does anyone know the answer to any of these questions? I got no idea ...

Dammit will I have to flip my solar panels? ... J/k On a serious note, it would be bad news for the current type of solar panels. They are damaged by high-energy particles, which is one of the reasons you rarely see them installed at high altitudes. The UV radiation is better higher up and it's cooler (both good for solar) but they fail much faster. The reversal would be very bad for modern technology, but it isn't associated with mass extinctions, so it shouldn't be a disaster. We'd want to make sure the ozone layer is in tip top shape well beforehand too.
