Lemongrass is not native here but I grow it in a big pot and protect it during the winter. It does well in pots.
I also grow lemon balm which here is perennial and comes back every year. It can be grown easily from seeds and since it is in the mint family once you have it it's there for life. I dry it and use for hot teas during the winter. Attracts bees too.
As a tea it has a calming effect and can also settle the stomach.

Our native lemon grasses have psychoactive properties ... generating strange and unusual dreams when ingested.
Which is perhaps not surprising when you see the quite vivid yellow smoke they produce when slowly burnt.

Really Our lemon grass is sold as an ornamental grass and pushed for those wanting edible landscaping. Botanical Name Cymbopogon citratus Common Name Lemongrass Plant Type Ornamental grass Mature Size 2 to 4 feet Sun Exposure Full sun Soil Type Rich and loamy Soil pH Neutral; 6.8-7.2 Bloom Time No flowers Flower Color None Hardiness Zones 10 to 11 Native Areas Sri Lanka and India I personally use mine in hot teas and cooking. No psychoactive dreams that I am aware of! Could give a whole new experience to a cup of tea... You Aussies get all the good stuff!

Native Lemongrass Cymbopogon ambiguus I have one growing now - let you know what I dream - unless the filters block what I say
