This seems a fit here, to me at least.. If there are other discussions please move..
Seems the mouse plague is not a new thing there.. Maybe in the particular area it is today, but has been reported before..
One small video telling about the spread of the problem.. One person saying poison them... One I think I have seen before, advocating catch and release in another location, politician saying in the same sentence, poison them, but not my idea...
I personally disagree with poison for the possibility of carry over, but faced with this kind of problem here would use it in a minute.. Western Canada has, is using poison for wolf as they are decimating deer, moose, caribou, livestock in parts of the country.. I don't like it, but understand the necessity..
Facts, details, experience, thoughts.. ?? ??

One of the big considerations is the use of minimum till cropping. No tilling means mice can safely breed in burrows and cause plagues. Some areas are ploughing thier fallow land and having good success in reducing the mice. Poison is the only viable alternative and the moron advocating catch and release quickly went back to sleep. I’m not sure about follow on effects with bromadialone but owls and predatory birds and other animals might get a gut ache or worse suffer considerable numbers of deaths leading the way for the next plague.

There are poisons' out that won't cause secondary deaths in wildlife, but they are 5 X more expensive than Ratsack etc, so farmers are reluctant to use them. You are right re the no till farming, lots more burrows etc seen in the no till farms than in conventionally ploughed paddocks. Weve got mice even being caught up in the headers cutter bars at present, luckily they fall back out of the grain as its passing through the winnower. Walking through the grain field after dark, the ground is just seething with movement of mice. Probably 10 -20 % loss of crop so far, storage will be the next big issue to keep the grain free from contamination by the mice, phosphine tablets are in short supply at present.
All the taxes paid by the typical person throughout their whole life are spent by the Government in less than one second.

I work in the Tamworth/Gunnedah region. 500 mouse killed a night in mine crib room, There is now a second wave and mice in the workplace are increasing. Inspection of the mine rehab areas - just mice holes and mice running everywhere. Got contractors to slash the grass it is mice running everywhere and the raven/crows catching them and fighting over them as they escape from the slasher.
I stay in a caravan with an annexure during the week, was trapping 15 - 20 mouse a night. Gave up with baits they would consume like 2 boxes a night. It is now down to 2-3 mice a day. Was sleeping under a mosquito net a one stage, the are just all over the place.
Very hard to find mouse traps and baits - Woolworths and Miter10 get them in by the pallet and they get sold out in a day. Even in Newcastle Lack Mac area - Bunnings shelves are stripped bare of mouse baits and traps.

Main poison used here is zinc phosphide. Cheap and deadly.
Plagues are related to having the right sequence of seasonal conditions.
Generally: Strong winds around harvest time cause lots of head shattering, leaving large amounts of grain on the ground. Lack of summer rain means the grain doesn't get germinated and remains a viable food source and mice don't die from exposure to wet. If the dry continues well into autumn, as it has done here this year, and there is lots of grain on the ground ... the number of mouse generations born over a few months results in massive exponential growth in their numbers.
The plagues are best controlled by the weather. Once it gets wet and cold they die in their millions without any help.

Home made Bucket traps (balance a bottle with bread stuck in the neck, on the edge of a bucket half filled with water and have a peice of wood leading up from ground to the bottle) are really good when numbers are that high. Much cheaper than baiting and less work than spring traps.

Much cheaper than baiting and less work than spring traps. Have made two bucket traps similar to the vid below. One woman on radio the other day said she puts washing powder soap in the water to reduce the density of the water and the mice drown quicker. Peanut butter is the best mouse mouse bait to use - just smear some on the bottle.

eventually these farmlands will turn to desert and the mice problem will be no more. I read the first sign of desertification is an abundance of vermin.
