I can't believe prepping still gets radical attention. They are just normal everyday peppers. At least the producers did not portray them as crazies perhaps they thought their actions would speak for themselves. The one gus was talking about building luxury bunkers in Australia

I so wish we could legally carry.....Dreaming I suppose. You are right, they aren't crazy, just being ready, perhaps the guns are a bit over the top, but they are fun to play with.

I really wish I could see one of these pieces WITHOUT the guns. I reckon you'd get a lot more average, every day Aussies interested if you showed them things like having a long term pantry and stockpiling equipment that didn't go bang. It's already in the media a lot more, families having prepper pantries (although calling them stockpiles instead because prepper pantries are crazy right? haha) so I don't think it would be hard to show people that there's a non-bang stick version that suits almost everyone. We're a bit of an echo chamber here, where guns aren't considered unusual. But for better or worse the vast majority of the population they are. Sometimes a softly, softly approach works really well and I think that's something we should capitalise on as a community and we just don't. Not to mention that first fire and movement practically gave me hives. I was worried that old matey that kept looking over his shoulder as he walked backwards while firing was going to put himself on his back end... Or put a round through someone. Someone needs to get them watching the Warrior Poet. He has some really great videos and shows from multiple angles how not to accidentally murder your mates . I would have liked to have heard more from the shrink though. Even an air of legitimacy would help, and someone that's a trained professional explaining why she feels it's wise to be a prepper would go a long way to promoting it to the young parents with families. Not to mention I got really kind of impressed when it seemed like she was giving a talk on emotional resiliency. It's something that as preppers we really don't hone in on that much (yeah I'm looking at you, crusty old grumpy men who don't have feelings dammit! hahaha) but we really really should. Resilience can save you when nothing else can. Having a piece with her explaining why she came to the prepping world and how she was helping her group to be more than just a gun club would have been pretty great. Then again it strikes me that the piece wasn't really a legitimate attempt to explain the average prepper lol.

There was one comment in YT saying it was filmes in 2012, which would make more sense. Then the bunker guy was talking about 2021 Myan calender. Perhaps 7 news just put it out there to get a response.

Last year I was approached by a producer of 60 Minutes, to film a story on me and the prepping culture here in Australia. We spoke many times over several months. I had made it clear to her (the producer) that I and the vast majority of preppers in Australia are just normal family people, just trying to be ready to provide for their family during a time of crisis. I made it clear there would be no guns, gas masks or camo in the segment. They lost interest.

Mainstream Media are lying filth of the most toxic kind! They act as the very willing Propaganda Apparatus for the Politicians, Police and Public Servants and that's it in a nutshell! I celebrate with a six pack every time I hear of the demise of a scumbag "Journalist" or so called "Media Personality" folks remember MSM are not on the side of the people they do not give a fying flaark about you, me or the average bloke on the street !

The 'We actually ARE normal people, not nutjobs who want to be combat wombats" story rarely gets told and I guess it's just because it's not sensational enough to garner the views. I think it's becoming more common to hear about shortages and people who buy things for a long term pantry nowadays though, we may get there eventually.

It was actually quite a good show - considering it is ABC - none of the rabid gun totting, apocalyptic Mad Max 2 whacko. I even checked out the website for his goods - not too bad.
Overall, quite balanced. Now for Ep 2.

Might have to give it a watch. I've noticed that there's quite a lot of articles popping in MSM of all leanings about mums prepping large pantries for their families, storing up medical supplies etc. It's becoming more and more mainstream as time goes on. The more positive promotion on the subject the better in my opinion.

Watched a bit, not all yet, of both videos..
Yes.. There is "more to it" than zombies and guns.. But zombies and guns sell more video minutes.. The phrase used to be "sells more newspapers" but that is on line now..
It seems even among most all US groups, prepper, survivalist seem quite more extreme than many.. Keep in mind... Alaskan bush savages are a "unique" group over and above many..
I'm going to say, within the limits on you in OZ and us Canucks I'm sure we could put up as respectable a resistance as anyone with more toys... Even with some being old guys like me..
My 5 cents of opinion ...eh...

A bit dated, but still useful info. The ABC TV showed a series around the mid 1970's called survivors, about a group of people left after a nuke war and their issues. Its was what got me interested in prepping, even though it was filmed in England I think. Still some lessons for us today. I have a couple of episodes on video tape, open reel and converted to video cassette. I must convert them to DVD before my ancient transcription video player gives its last rattle.
