Good times hey Norseman. Yep the good ole days mate! Lost the shelter in the back is a Silnylon Poncho Plow Pointed but sides raised to let the heat out in the day and then dropped at night. I was originally going to replace my US Issue Ponchos with it, being both heaps lighter and more compact but ended up sticking with the originals, this one just didn't work for me.

Have read the differences on materials of the mil spec ponchos and non mil spec. Ill have to try and get my hands on the real deal.
Non mil spec ive read are Waterproof ripstop polyester with a PVC coating whereas the mil spec real deal ponchos are made with military specification ripstop nylon taffeta with a urethane waterproof coating.

Our team regard Lyle Brotherton's book "Ultimate Navigation Manual" to be the "Bible" on Modern Land Navigation. The core principle is the application of "Micro Navigation" techniques to get you from Point A to Point B and all places in between! These days this Manual is hard to get in Oz at a civilized price but is well worth acquiring, there is now an E-book version available but it's definitely better in the paper format if you can find it! Recently this former Royal Marine produced a really good YT vid on "Micro Navigation" take the time to watch it's well worth it. Edited: Just found the book discounted here for $24.35:- www.booktopia.com.au/ultimate-navigation-manual-lyle-brotherton/book/9780007424603.html

Thanks for the heads up on that book, just purchased it tonight. That yt channel is a good informative one too, i often watch his vids. Just a question on topo maps here in oz, im qld so i can print them out using qtopo qtopo.information.qld.gov.au/ at 1.5 scale and 1.100 scale, or should i buy some decent topo maps at 1.25 scale and where would i get decent ones, ive seen hema maps around at bcf and some local camping stores, are these any good?

Got the "Ultimate Navigation Manual" book today, not bad postage times from booktopia since i ordered it on sunday night. Good quality book too, clear concise color pages, well worth the $32.
Now it would be nice to find the "SERE = Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape" manual with similar book quality somewhere, ive searched but i dont think you can buy printed versions of this?

SNARING FISH
I recently discovered this technique on a German Army SERE video (4.57) so decided to investigate further! If you've ever walked along the bank of a trout stream with a rod and and an empty bag and then eyeballed a 4 pounder paddling right at your feet you'll "get it" ! Strictly illegal but a possible lifesaver in a survival emergency! And a description from here:- forum.downsizer.net/viewtopic.php?t=15646&start=0I don't condone this method at all (Rolling Eyes) but just out of interest this is a quick run down of what you do. You need a braided wire snare , not as thick as a rabbit snare but still fairly rigid . If the wire is a bit shiny bury it in the garden for a week or so to take the newness off it. Cut your self an innocent looking thumb stick and practice fastening your snare securely to the end of it. Go for a walk with your stick and with the snare in your pocket along side a river or a canal say and this is where a set of polaroid glasses might come in handy. Next thing to do is to spot your fish as it lies by the margin. Check that there aren't any spectators and attach your snare. Put the snare up stream from the fish and slowly bring it down stream towards the fish as though it were just a bit of debris coming down with the current. Without touching the fish pass the wire over the fishes head and past its gills. Then with a sharp but controlled motion lift the walking stick and the fish upwards and out onto the bank. This method works really well on long lengthy fish such as salmon or pike. I always check any fish that I see that are on the slab for the the tell tale ring of removed scales just behind the head.

The old style Garand Thumb is back! I'm really not much interested in his weapons / Run n Gun type stuff boring and mostly irrelevant to Aussies, but his Fieldcraft, and Equipment and Clothing concepts are pretty good!
The potential value for "preppers" is well summed up via the opening viewer comments in the video:-
cristian verzelloni 1 hour ago .....................................
"to me, recon is the epitome of the Soldier job. there is nothing more important than a pair of mk1eyball looking for the enemy, there is nothing more important than some properly collected intel on the environments in front of you, where the enemy is and what it is doing.. also, as a prepper, in my mind being proficient at doing recce work is an amazing foundation for being a prepper.. you know how to move, hot to survive, how to see while net being seen.. you know how to fight yet fight is not your main goal.. thanks Sir for this and the upcoming video."
and this:-
Matt Fleming 2 hours ago.............................
"Fk yeah. I'm glad you've made a return to some more serious videos. You do humor and sheetposting great- but this is where you shine."
Ben K 2 minutes ago..................................................
"So stoked for this series! I feel like it's safe to say this is one direction we all want this channel to go!"
This could be a good series of future videos!

At long last! For Escaping and Evading / Bugging Out an OK segment from GT, a potentially worthwhile addition! Hope you never need it!

There is some really good stuff in this video! I'd really like to have a "backpacker" come back with the counter argument / point of view! Bruce Lee ringing in my ears again “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” :-

A month old now but decided to include it, I'm steadily gaining more respect for this man's mindset and philosophy. Worth the watch in my opinion!
