The NSW Police Commissioner has approached the Prime Minster requesting he send in the Army to assist with Covid Lockdown Enforcement in Sydney! That's effectively Martial Law right there! Just reported on 2GB Radio!

Excellent. I hope they get issued rat packs. I happy to pay in cash, beer, bourbon...
Mobile resupply pods.

The NSW Police Commissioner has approached the Prime Minster requesting he send in the Army to assist with Covid Lockdown Enforcement in Sydney! That's effectively Martial Law right there! Just reported on 2GB Radio! MASSIVE leap from 'requesting assistance' to martial law . The police commissioner can request assistance from the ADF at any time for any reason. There's absolutely no guarantees that they'll get it no matter how confident and arrogant they are about their request status. I've seen a few times that the ADF has declined to provide bodies in regards to Covid assistance in the news, there's no reason to assume that this will be any different. They mention the word 'enforcement' in the news articles I've seen. That's largely puff. ADF have as much law enforcement capacity as every other Joe Bloggs. That is, citizen's arrest. That's it. From a quick google search, a citizen's arrest can only be conducted in the absence of law enforcement officers. As ADF have previously only assisted by patrolling with police officers (at least, that's the way it seems in the pictures I've seen in the news) they legally have no capacity for involvement. Now if in the news they suddenly start reporting that ADF members have been given law enforcement powers I'll be concerned. But they haven't. It's not martial law or even close to it. It's just asking for assistance and most likely only in the capacity that they've provided in the past like hotel sign in/luggage handlers, some medical personnel assistance and perhaps iso checks when people are at home rather than hotels.

It show that police are staffed at very minimal levels. If rioting and looting break out across multiple districts security services would be overwhelmed. Just waiting for the global economy to collapse, then things will get very bad. I definitely agree. If they're struggling with manning now I wouldn't be keen to see what happens if people start to panic.

Hahaha you absolutely can!
But also... I'm grown enough to admit when I'm wrong. It seems the deployment has been approved. At least, from what I can see in newer reports. Although I'm not sure about numbers. They looked pretty stretched thin with numbers for covid tasking from ADF in recent times. And we have to remember with TS going on and the shenanigans in our own region it's unlikely that they'd want to commit to heavily 'just in case'. Plenty of reservists clocking up their hours for the year I'd guess.
That being said it appears logistics (that'll be the bag-handling, hotel sign in and movements assistance) and the 'walking along behind the cops, (being largely useless portion rofl). So I guess it's part way there. But I'll stand by my "I'll be worried if they give ADF enforcement powers' because the ADF is not and has never been a law enforcement agency. I think Aussies in general and our ADF members at large would probably be very uncomfortable with the idea. Not that I talk for everyone, there's probably a huge chunk of the population who'd love the craziness that'd come out of law enforcement in this country!

Your average grunt activates Plan B and joins a State or Federal Law Enforcement Agency, frequently a poor outcome! I know this because I've worked with shitloads of them before they go full "Plan B" !! Former ADF signing up for Law Enforcement is "a good plan" for the individual, it's "a good plan" for the agency but it's rarely "a good plan" for the average citizen!

Former infantry fit right into the police force. They are dumb enough. Like the only reason military have their nametags stiched onto the shirts is because infantry can't even remember their own name.
For example, friend of mine who was in 3RAR. Did the mortar course (how the fark he got his head around all the maths and angles that involves is beyond me), and at end of course thought the best way to dispose of all the unused charge bags was to pile them up and light them up. I never seen so many guys run so fast, screaming like little girls at a Justin Beiber concert.

And I'll admit, despite their general low IQ and inability to use a knife and fork, I definitely have a soft spot for their shenanigans. That made me giggle.

When 3RAR were still based at Holsworthy at southern Sydney, this same digger was stuck on base almost all alone as everyone else had gone home for Christmas. He was from Perth and didn't want to waste his free ticket home whilst his girl was overseas. I didn't want him on base left to his own devices, because not long before he had nearly burned the lines down with an unauthorised cook up in his room.
So I arranged a hunting trip for him with my son and son's mates at my retreat. Picked him up, took him to the local shops so he could get a few days provisions. He came out of the shop with a couple cases of beer and about 10kg of beef steaks. And literally nothing else. Yep, gotta love those grunts.
