What is in the cage outside the fence by the hay bale it is interested in ??

Nothing under the hand cart, we have a few of those lizards floating around here.
Yeah, months ago the dog chased one up the tree.

Nah, just a dinosaur. Its a monitor lizard. >>> <<< Again ....CRYKEY... Mate.... Wikipedia says there are 27 kinds of lizard... Anywhere from 2 meter to 20 cm... And they are CARNIVEROUS, and you say climb trees.... I sure don't want to find one off the ground at eye level any time... I have to admit, my first encounter with one would likely leave a racing stripe in my shorts...
As much as I don't like dealing with them, I will stick with bears.. They are reasonably predictable..

Theres one at a local shooting range that walks around the place and gets hand feed, theyre not bad at all.

What is with dogs and goannas ? Our dingo cross dog is always chasing them and treeing them when they cross the yard. And they are strong, a 3 footer can easily drag you up the tree if you grab its tail and hang on. They do bite, and because they eat all sorts of dead stuff, their fangs are really bad news with infections if you do get chomped on.

You've just been to the local tip and picked up a high quality AM/FM tuner/amplifier, say a Kenwood, Philips, Marantz etc, from the 1970's that would have cost over $500 back then. You cant see it just sit there and gradually fall apart, so you put it into your car, thinking...some day... Well that day has arrived. How about turning it into a reasonable short wave receiver, for about $ 20 worth of bits and a couple of hours work ? The converter described below, makes the AM section of the radio into a triple conversion receiver. The BFO shown is optional and only needed if you want to listen to single side band transmissions, say Ham operators. It can be built 'dead bug' style, just solder the components to the pins of the NE612 ic, actual layout doesn't matter, it will still work. The IC can be a NE602, or NE612, the frequency we are using it at doesn't matter which type. Yes, you can also cover the AM band with it, and all sorts of funny things happen if the tuner and converter are set to the same frequency. The actual IC wont oscillate much below 1 megahertz anyway, as its designed for the 950 meg mobile band. 2 versions are shown, the crystal version is a bit more stable, say for use in a car with an old AM car radio, whilst the tunable version is more for use with a tuner. Only 1 simple coil needs to be wound, air core, wound on an AA battery, then the battery removed and the coil taped together. Gauge of wire is unimportant, and any small diameter wire, even a piece of mains wire (although it looks a bit silly as its so thick) will work. The design uses the tuner as a tuneable intermediate frequency, and the design will cover all the popular short wave bands, and with a 10 meter aerial, can receive the world at your fingertips. Obviously, such a simple design has some limitations. The circuit suffers from 'double spotting', where the same station appears in more than one place on the dial. Because of this, accurate calibration is difficult, and probably unnecessary as there is considerable overlap in the coverage of the main short wave bands. I have found it to be almost overload proof, and connecting to a 100 meter aerial, usually a no-no with modern radios, doesn't cause any issues at all, because it is of the design called a balanced mixer. the main effect of a long aerial is breakthrough of broadcast stations on the tuner. Use a shielded piece of coax to connect the converter to the AM aerial input socket on the tuner, and connect the shield to the chassis. The other effect is the bandwidth is quite wide, due to the tuner being either 9 khz or 10 khz, and there could be some adjacent channel splatter audible, but the quality of short wave broadcasters, especially the stronger ones will surprise you. A 12 volt battery will power the converter for ages as it uses very little power. A 9 v battery can also be used, and if u do, remove the zenier diode and associated resistor as they are not needed.
Circuits follow.
The first is a crystal locked type, the second a free running type.
The crystal can be almost any type, from an old cb radio channel crystal, to a 3.57 megahertz tv color burst crystal from a junked tv set.
Happy listening.

Did you just cut strips from regular vacseal bags for the tabs? And would these still do the with a working vacsealer machine, like wouldn't sit too close to the seal element? I've found the proper vacseal mylar bags are fairly expensive compared to regular mylar bags.

The vac sealer works fine, its just not hot enough to seal the mylar. Didnt know they were proper ones, but im a tight arse and this seems to work fine for me.

I've owned a Terava Jaakaripuukko 110 for probably close to 4 or 5 years ($30 each!). I've never looked at another fixed blade field knife since! They are Gold!
