Thirty years ago the very first thing I planted on my acreage was a "Tahitian Lime Tree" it was two feet tall and relatively speaking a sickly looking specimen, today it stands 15ft tall and provides fruit virtually 365 days a year! I've never pruned it, fertilised it, sprayed it or done any of that other horticultural stuff! A Lime tree as a preventative for scurvy is a must in my book! Scurvy cases have risen in the UK and it’s giving people major Victorian vibes

Cases of the Victorian era illness scurvy have more than doubled in the last decade and people cannot believe it.
The Mirror reported on NHS Digital statistics revealing that hospital reported cases of scurvy – a severe form of vitamin C deficiency which can cause fatigue, bruised skin, swelling of the limbs and tooth loss – increased from 82 in 2010-11 to 171 in 2020-21, though these numbers are still relatively low.www.msn.com/en-gb/health/familyhealth/scurvy-cases-have-risen-in-the-uk-and-it-s-giving-people-major-victorian-vibes/ar-AAQxr54?ocid=msedgntp

Sadly scurvy has never really gone away in the lower socioeconomic areas of the western world. Poor education levels generally mean that even if they've even heard of it, they assume that it's a transmittable disease rather than a vitamin deficiency. Unfortunately people who haven't had the education to understand the risks also rarely have the money to spend on healthcare. Rickets still happens regularly too. There's a lot of things that we assume have gone away just because it's rare to hear about it.
It's depressing to report on the number of children who're permanently disabled thanks to chronic malnutrition, especially in your own country where we assume that SOMEone will prevent things like that.

maybe a slice of tomato on the big mac occasionally as well.

what kind of diet are they living on? Must be all sugar treats and fast food crap. Generally, yes. I remember watching a British show a couple of years back about families who would buy take away every night of the week because they were so cheap and easy to get. In a lot of cases it cost the same amount as buying fresh produce but they didn't have to cook the food themselves. I remember being pretty shocked seeing young families sitting down to a kebab and chips every single night just because they didn't have to cook it. But of course I was shocked. I was raised on fresh produce in a place where the only take out anywhere nearby was the local milk bar and their fish and chips. If I'd been raised that it was normal to feel sluggish and gross all the time and constantly have health issues from lack of proper nutrition I probably wouldn't know different. That show had several examples of people saying 'I can't believe how much healthier I feel!' just a few weeks later. But so often they'd go right back to it because of the ease and cheap prices. Sometimes it's ignorance. Some times it's laziness. But the ones who stuck with eating 'real food' usually were so much happier and healthier when they went back to check on them.

I guess I won't have scurvy soon.. All fall I have had a taste for grapefruit.. Always have liked it..
People will commit all manor of stupid, for a lot of stupid reasons... There is a story from several years ago that a young couple who were no meat and other lifestyle choices decided there infant child would be self diagnosed by them as vegan, gluten and lactose intolerant.. The child passed away and was found to have died of malnutrition on a lot of levels..
