SDR is Software Defined Radio, the RTL is the chipset used t run the bugger. Originally based on DTV functionality.
Just simply, these are radio receivers built into a dongle. No need for internet either.

Cheeky batsrads. What transceiver ya looking at getting? Still looking, my budget is not great. So im looking at older units.
Basically have a $300 budget currently.
The goal with the SDR is to be able to atleast listen until i can get a transceiver. Something in a HF at a minimum. Have UHF/VHF covered, wouldnt mind a all in one unit, but im looking at 1K and up.

I bought mine from rtl-sdr.com. It is the real deal there and I made certain I picked the US shop and not the Chinese one. It came in about 3 weeks and cost me about 65-70. Can’t remember the exact amount.
I do strongly recommend to get an external antennae for it and not use and not rely on the bunny ears. Also get a scanner antennae. A good diamond brand all range one can be had for about 200 from strictly ham. You need the full range to get the full use of the device.
they are very handy to have and the ability of visually seeing what frequencies are being used by the waterfall display is very good.
plus it it is good fun to eavesdrop too.

Currently have a Diamond VX30 on the roof (as of the weekend) for the UHF and VHF side of things. Its been on the deck for about a year, so it was about time to finish the installation.
Was looking at other antennas the other day, but will wait till i have the transceiver before another antenna.

YAESU-991A will do the lot for you, but needs an external PSU.
