Goodwill and other thrift stores can be real goldmines for a smart prepper. They carry an amazing range of items, and it’s always worth taking a good look – you never know what you’ll find collecting dust in a corner. Here are some of the common prepper items you’ll find at Goodwill: www.askaprepper.com/13-prepper-items-you-should-look-for-at-goodwill/

Agree with the buckets one. Can never have enough and they break regularly.

I didnt know we had goodwill operating in oz, thought it was yank operation. The problem with Goodwill for most of us "yanks" is that they are mostly found in large metropolitan areas. More common and widespread are estate sales usually after deaths, yard sales and garage sales. In the past I have found these a great source of garden tools.. especially older ones that tend to be a better quality than the ones in the stores today. Many times they will have to be cleaned up and the handles replaced but well worth it. Metal bowls.. usually stainless steel and are light, easily stored and worth their weight in gold for canning and preserving. candles which can always be melted and repoured. camping supplies, lanterns, sleeping bags etc... cast iron skillets and cookware again the older usually the better quality knitting needles, patterns, darning balls, wool and sewing machines axes, hatchets, splitting mauls, wood stoves and fireplace accessories canning jars and canning accessories such as large pots, kettles and pressure canners

More popular here in oz are the salvos or st vincent de pauls. Ive never seen goodwill in the state of qld, but i dont actively look for em either. Ive picked up some decent stuff at the salvos, got me a few nice 2 litre ex mil canteens not long ago in good condition, shorts and shirts and stuff like that but mostly the stuff ive seen isnt worth it, just brick a brack and womens clothing, crappy overpriced furniture and used plastic toys, dvds and music cds.

At the thrift store, garage sale, grandmas attic, you name it.. Even grandpas garage you will sort through a lot of stuff that may be useful some time or another, but not a treasure of the day... But it can be worth the effort at times.. I guess to us, it is the "thrill of the hunt" .....
For instance..... We have a big 7qt Kitchen Aid mixer... But the 4.5qt Kitchen Aid mixer, complete with all the attachments, I found at the thrift store ($30 CDN) has made things a lot easier for Sweetie depending on the kitchen mission she is on at the moment.. I'm a big guy, so finding clothes can be hard.. But it seems when I do find things I can ware, it is a significant score... Well worth the time for us to explore these opportunities..
Everyones experience and interests will be different..

Salvos collaborated with the Vic government, discriminating against and refusing to assist the unvaccinated. They can go to hell.

Yep did that, soaked them in vinegar for a few days, then i put boiling water in them let them sit for a few hours and did that 3 times.

The Salvation Army. They are a somewhat odd organisation here. Part church group, part charity, part corporate conglomerate.
Up until 2 years ago I held a favourable view of them. They would help out with the homeless, run charity shops etc. My partner had volunteered with them previously.
It was when they turned collaborator that they lost me. They could have stood up publicly and said "we are going to help everyone who needs it, no matter what. That's our reason for existance." Large religious groups are one of the very few organisations that can really stand up to a government and refuse to budge on their values. But they didn't. They became another NPC marching in goose-step with the government. They refused entry to their charity shops to the very people who would become in need because they'd lost their jobs, were being discriminated against etc. I will never, ever support them again in any way at all.

In our valley they morphed into a cult like group that only ever circulated their donated funds through those attending their church and family members. Their "Kids Club" style gatherings were serious indoctrination of young children. Thankfully they are now dismantled and gone their church is an empty non operational building.

It was when they got busted for child abuse (like all the other churches & their spin-offs) that did it for me...no coming back from that...

Thanks for the clarification! We have salvation Army here still but not very many I think. The only time I ever see them is when they are standing in front of the department stores at Christmas with a pot and a bell. My husband was always more positive toward the Salvation Army than the Red Cross. When he was working emergency sites as a military policeman in the National Guard the Salvation Army would bring the soldiers hot coffee and sandwiches and really treat them well. The Red Cross charged them for everything and gave them nothing. To this day my husband will not donate to the Red Cross.
Many more Goodwill stores than Salvation Army but again mostly in larger cities. Not much of that kind of stuff out here in the mountains.

Those Christian charity groups need to ask themselves if Jesus would have refused to help an unvaccinated person in need.

The Salvation Army. They are a somewhat odd organisation here. Part church group, part charity, part corporate conglomerate. --- --- Near as I could tell from my limited knowledge of the slang and nic names from down there.. Salvos stood for most any second hand type store, Salvation Army or like organization..
Here in Pot Hole City we have a main Salvation Army store (Sally Ann is our nic name for it) and 2 satalite stores.. The one we use is where we have friends that work there.. The others we have not gone to since they did the woke appologize for being white thing..
We have a St Vincent that is quite small and limited.. We have a small thrift store connected to the local hospice organization.. We have a significatnt store called Value Village that is connected to an agency that works with multiple charieties somehow.. Frankly much of this is connected to the shelters, and other needs of the homeless which is mostly of indiginous population.. Seemingly a never ending, bottomless pit of need.. However, the store is a good source of occasional treasures for us... The thrill of the hunt...

We have 3 thriftshops/opshops in our town, all offering slightly different things. I volunteer in one of them and recently bought a kerosene lantern in good condition. I now have to get some more wick for it. I've got other useful things from op shops and garage sales, such as a good stainless steel preserving pan, a good garden hoe which is one of my favourite tools and variousother things like new clothes, shoes, books etc. You would be surprised at how many new clothes come through our shop. I suppose people buy them online and can't be bothered returning them if they don't fit. The standard of things sold in thrift shops is much better than it was several years ago.

Quality of some items seems to be a bit better, however also seemingly higher prices, pretty much across the board... This my opinion anyway.. For us, it is the thrill of the hunt for the rare item we can use.. And at this point in life ..what we can use.. is a rare item..
