Yeah its pretty wet down brisbane way, theres been i think 5 deaths so far. Last i heard was over 1000mm of rain in the last 60 - 70 hours. Also seq water is saying water quality is not going to be good for a time due to sediment build up due to overflowing creeks and rivers that lead into the treatment plants, so encouraging people to conserve water now, plenty of it coming out the sky though so get ya tanks full for sure.

It's bad. Real bad. Whole areas are being evacuated and in some places houses are going entirely into the drink. I'm nowhere near there but I spent some time in QLD during an el nino summer and it was still wet enough that our clothes line nearly fell over from the soil being so sludgy. That's the fun part about Australia. You get either summers where half the country is on fire, or summers where half the country is under water. Keeps us on our toes!

What I find interesting is that it has come so close to the last "big one". 2011 isn't that long ago...

These areas either need to see people move out of the worst affected areas, or some serious flood mitigations put in place. Either dams, permanent levies/whatever.

Insurance companies will probably do that job for us I think... They already have in some areas. South lismore houses are mostly uninsurable and businesses in CBD have $50k plus annual insurance costs. Many coastal properties built on raised pads on floodplains have very high annual costs.

Lismore, Wilsons river peaked at 16.2 meters, previous peak was in 1877 at 13.4 meters. Massive flooding, most of Lismore damaged, main street 4 meters deep, most shops under water to roof tops, caravans floating down river, people crying out for rescue from rooftops. See link www.facebook.com/groups/LismoreInformationExchange/10 people missing in floodwaters, water up to Hospital car park, power turned off as power lines at boat level, SES calling for anyone with a tinny and experience/gear to help. Army mobilized. Casino dodged the bullet, minor flooding, some shops damaged and some low lying houses with water in them. Main CBD just escaped, Coles/Wollies and Aldies shut. Had over 600 mm rain, Richmond river 3 meters below flood peak at Casino, flooding caused by blocked drains. All of Lismore and Casino, boiled water alert, do not drink tap water as the water treatment plants are under water. Likewise, dont flush the toilet as there is no where for it to go and it will come back at u. Out our way, minor road flooding, the usual suspects, will be probably OK by tomorrow, although some roads closed due to landslides and debris. I think Councils are going to be busy ! Likewise insurance companies. No tagline as its a serious situation.

Still have the footage from my phone actually. They said that it was a once in a lifetime/generation event but Brisbane seems to get hit nearly every year by some sort of serious storm. We seem to get a constant stream of hail & flood damaged vehicles from Qld. coming through the insurance auctions here in Melbourne...it never used to be like that.

I have no sympathy for people who choose to live in a flood plain.
My sympathy lies with the SES staff and volunteers who have to deal with stupidity, like a good friend who has to take calls from people trapped in floodwater, desperate for help before they drown, telling them there's no help available.

Same, I ended up having to work building security in a riverside office block that lost it's entire fire system in the flood and we had to act as fire marshals on each floor. Many of those buildings with multistorey underground car parks ended up getting even more water in them when the cars left parked there started to float with the flood water and bobbed around knocking off the fire sprinkler systems adding even more water into the car parks lol

Problem is that floodplains are nearly always the most productive (due to soil quality) parts of the country...not everyone is looking for a bugout location that doesn't have to make a living for them. I understand there are exceptions where clowns are buying and building in crazy (to us) places but I think insurance companies will make this decision for people in the future...if you cant insure people wont build.
Goulburn Valley in Vic. is a good example...very productive due to irrigation etc but it is a ticking time bomb if you get the right rainfall in the right river systems. Not to mention if anything ever happens to the dam structure at Eildon! The whole place would turn into a big muddy smear on a sat image if that happened!

More reason not to build on them, use that productive soil for food production.

Interesting about the blocked drains. in my area usual maintenance hasn’t happed due to all the wet weather for the past 3 months leaving them full of growth that slows down water and causes backup. Take care if you purchase fuel, most of the stations around are in the flood zone making the risk of sludge being pumped into your tanks a strong possibility. The Lismore situation is a shocker. The alarm was not raised until an hour before the levee broke at 2am. Similar situation to SEQ. These so called “professional” emergency services staff that coordinate this stuff should be sacked. They are worse than useless, they are dangerous.

a good example...very productive due to irrigation etc but it is a ticking time bomb if you get the right rainfall in the right river systems. --- --- We have the same here... The whole river system, from the Pacific to above us in the north central province has wonderful growing ground on either side.. But starting at the suburb of Vancouver ...spit... where the river meets the ocean the land is too valuable for crops, so it has all converted to condos and mcmanshions sold to mostly rich investors from China.... They are entrenched and powerful enough there, when confronted to list there business names and signs in either English or French as well as Chinese, they told authorities to get stuffed.. And got away with it.. The loss of one levy or drainage causeway and the whole suburb could, would flood, possibly with sea water depending on weather conditions at the time.. People never seem to learn, or more likely don't care if a dollar can be extracted at the moment..

What unfolded in Lismore area yesterday was a complete disaster with very marginal assistance being rendered by the Orthowitees!

Insurance companies will probably do that job for us I think... Many have no insurance up this way as the home insurance quotes in flood prone zones can be like $20,000 - $30,000 per annum. A lot of those places gone under further North are not covered!

Water broke over the banks of the Richmond river at Casino late last night. Flooded CBD in Casino to knee deep. Lots of damage and big cleanup. Just seen a large landslide on the range, so no going to or from town for a few days. Some shops managed to get sandbags in in time, but most not. Salvation army shrift shop and food pantry destroyed. Gun shop flooded to knee deep. Aldies out of action, Wollies and Coles apparently open. Most petrol stations in town closed with water in tanks. This is what prepping is all about people.
The colder the x-ray table, the more of your body needs to be in contact with it.

What unfolded in Lismore area yesterday was a complete disaster with very marginal assistance being rendered by the Orthowitees! MsM have reverted to blatant lies now. Every rescue is supposedly been by the SES which is total BS. SES didn’t substantially turn up until lunchtime yesterday after all their BS paperwork and briefings. They left hundreds of people unaccounted for overnight. Worse than a 3rd world response. Actually we could learn from the 3rd world, they get stuck in and have a go. Their HQ is underwater. That facility was abandoned by the westpac heliservice due to frequent flooding years ago and some numpty in SES thought it a great idea to make it their shed.
