Interesting question.....
I'm going to think a strong blech solution will kill the fungus.. Set the container out in bright sun to dry ?? A container sitting in full sun that gets to 50C plus that is too hot to touch, will that kill the fungus ?? Now... Getting the fungus unstuck from the inside of the container could be another issue.. What would work best ?? Will plastic or metal container make a difference ??
Anyone with experience, please share info..

drain cleaner. As in ... Caustic soda. Fungi hates alkali's and that stuff will really nuke it.
Chlorine will also work ... its the active ingredient in many commercial mould removers ... however ... on metal it is highly corrosive and will cause serious rust.
I like to rinse out diesel cans periodically with petrol.
