Some would opine that China is not the catalyst for regional military buildup. Hence a poll to gauge the broader opinion.

Absolutely China is. They are the only country in east asia (besides North Korea) that is actively threatening their neighbours and annexing their territory. Any result other than a military build up would be very surprising.

There are no good guys and bad guys in geopolitics. There are only worse and worst.
We are going through one of those really shitty phases in history where a dominant empire dies, and everyone jostles to fill the vacuum. The West thought it could do a controlled demolition of it's own civilisation so it could build anew, but failed to consider that other powers might opt out of the demolition process and just fill any void we create.

I’ve voted yes. But think Rastus makes a very good comment.

It's only a 'shitty phase in history' if you let it have a negative impact on you. I couldn't care less what China does to it's neighbours. It won't impact me unless they cut our sea lanes, and even then that would present some great opportunities for those prepared to take advantage of them.

I voted no, because the poor management of the region by the larger 'powers' (aka. our government over the last decade) has emboldened them. Where before they would default to diplomacy and working together with other regional powers they now have decided that it's quicker and easier to go on the aggro. Were they already stretching their hands into areas that they didn't traditionally belong? For sure. Did we and others make it easy for them? In so, so many ways.
There's many other factors of course but in reality that's what it boils down to in my mind. They do whatever they're allowed to get away with, and then when someone finally jerries to their behaviour they yell "But we've been doing this for years, so you knew! You can't complain now!". And they're right.

If not the root cause then definitely one of the branches!

On the subject of "Rising Hostilities", I discovered a few days ago through a colleague that a bloke and his partner who I once worked with and are now living and working in China have been ambushed and badly beaten up for being foreigners! Injuries included fractured eye sockets etc. Don't go to China!

Injuries included fractured eye sockets etc. Don't go to China! It's unfortunately not a rare occurrance. One common theme is where a local robs the foreigner, then when chased, the local yells "Help! This foreigner is attacking me!". The foreigner is then usually attacked by other locals. I'll take a leap of faith and say that the culprits were never convicted and punished for what they did to that bloke. It's a combination of ultra-nationalism and racism, actively stoked by the CCP. Most foreigners are leaving China now, for this and myriad other reasons.

The west isnt innocent either but i know where i would rather live, despite frustrations with corruption in our system and overly controlling laws, they have it far worse. I think people in the countries that are being aggroed on probably feel the same.
