I have trouble reading these days, so tend to stick to simple gardening/farming non fiction. Also some seinen manga and light novels since it is so easy to read.
Used to love reading all the time before I copped an hypoxic event. Mystery, action, fantasy, history, horror and lots of reference stuff in IT and engineering. My favourites used to be Red Dwarf and Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy series.

Give Audible a try Stealth... I did try that. You know what I found? THEY READ TOO SLOW!!! 🤣 I decided to try it out when we were on a return trip from a family holiday. I think the mistake I made was using a book that I've read previously so I knew what was coming up and got annoyed that I couldn't spead-read (listen?) the boring parts to get to the interesting bits haha. I did try with another book later down the track and found it wasn't too bad, that was a non-fiction book that I hadn't read before. But I think I'm one of those weirdo "I need to hold the book" types. I find fiction and non-fiction equally valuable. But if I'm reading for entertainment I tend to lean towards fiction. Non-fiction is reality, and reality can be entertaining just as much as fiction so I'd never say that I think either one doesn't have it's place. It's just that if I have the time and energy to dedicated to reading for several hours I'll tend to go for something that lets me totally remove myself from reality for a while. I think it's a bit of a brain space thing for me. I have to make time and energy to read non-fiction because I'm generally reading that specifically to learn. That means I need to focus closely enough to retain the information. Whereas fiction, it really doesn't matter whether or not I remember individual specific facts. Then again occasionally you'll find me reading about the Great Emu Wars or Ferret Legging purely out of curiosity. Out of coincidence I tried ferret legging also out of curiosity. Do not recommend.

d What's up mate? Your comments all seem to have an arrogant undertone to them! In fact you are coming across like one of the newer breed ex-ADF self-labelled "Veteran" types that I've been required to work with lately. Do you have a problem with the people here specifically or it's just how you communicate with everyone? I think you might be taking things a bit personally, I have no issue with anyone on the forum, I might disagree with a position they take so I’ll argue the position, not disparage the person. But hey if you wish to discuss it further feel free to drop me a message as we needn’t derail the thread. "I trust the irony of that statement on this forum isn’t lost."
Not taking it personally at all mate don't have the time or energy for it! But how about contributing something real here mate if you don't consider yourself above the place! Mate you've been here five minutes and you throw shit like that above!

If it upsets you this much why not add me to your ignore list and then you won’t have to see me point out ironic statements, full disclosure- I’ll probably do it regularly given the opportunity. Most people saw it for the funny little moment it was and moved on but if it gets to you this much then block me.

Sounds like you might be disappointed then. I rest my case! Though if your qualification of “adding value” is your complaining in this thread- the most active thread in the past 24 hours I might add (pretty good value I’m bringing aye) Then I’m not sure what kind of things you class as valuable? I mean, the threads I start are getting activity, my posts are getting liked.

Seems like you haven’t read the thread? if you feel my posts upset you just smash that ignore button- Edit: I just had a quick look for the ignore/block function as I should take my own advice but couldn’t see it in the 1 minute I looked. *shrug* might have to ignore me in an analog way.

I've found prepping is a bit like religion - there are different levels of devoutness (if that's a word!).

Fiction has had a bad habit of becoming non-fiction recently.

I've found prepping is a bit like religion - there are different levels of devoutness (if that's a word!). Quite right. Seems to me there’s a time to be super serious and times to just shoot the shit and joke around, also sorry but really someone calling out fiction as a waste of time on a prepper site is a bit funny.

On a personal level, I find fiction as momentary escapism and not really worthy of wasting resources (both mine and the planets) on a physical book. I hardly ever re-read fiction so see no point in keeping a book to clutter up my living space. I keep text books, history, diet, health and opinions - Ray Dalio's was my latest (The Changing World Order). Audio books work for me as a format.
On a forum level; if you agree that prepping is a bit like religion - have you ever just shot the shit and joked around with a Pentecostal?
I find some of the opinions and theories here a bit left field, but do I know with 100% conviction that they are wrong? ...100%?... No, I don't. Bit like the existence of deity I guess.
I have never looked at the forum as fiction...that's a bridge too far for some folks here and I respect that.
Think of it as walking into a packed place of worship and yelling out that their deity was a delusion. Some wouldn't care that much, others might want to "off" you!

There's gonna be a range of people from those who take an interest but don't act on it, to those who are absolutely committed and an expert in solar off-grid etc.

I've never been a big reader. Instead I enjoy watching movies, documentaries or more recently, Youtube clips.
I do prefer non-fiction but I also see the value in fiction.
Non-fiction can help educate about all manner of things from gardening, woodwork, IT or survival techniques (pretty sure we've all read a survival book or two). And history books are a wealth of information ie: lessons learned from history can help prevent it repeating.
Apart from the escape from reality, fiction can stimulate one's mind and help with creativity. Just think about how many science fiction ideas have turned into reality.

I've found prepping is a bit like religion - there are different levels of devoutness (if that's a word!). I agree. eg: Devout Christians attend church at least once a week. Others that are less devout don't attend church at all and may only identify as Christian when filling out the census. And now for a bit of light hearted fun . . . Here's a few prepping gods to get a list started Mad Max - prepared for apocalypseJohn Lofty Wiseman - prepared for being lost in the wildernessBear Grylls - prepared for adventure with TV crew I'm probably the Lofty kind, but also follow Malcolm Douglas, Les Hiddins etc. I like to be prepared for unexpected wilderness survival where carrying the right gear makes survival easier. Is funds ever permit my ultimate goal would be an apocalypse prepper with multiple retreats.

That’s the thing about fiction, everything is fiction until it’s not. Free on audible currently is a Tom Clancy Book, hearts on fire. All about a virus, exclusion zones, people told to stay home etc would have seemed more far fetched a few years ago.. it’s good for the mind to imagine these things and get those creative juices flowing.
