Prior to my current vocation (actually a few vocations ago) I used to build traditional archery tackle, typically bastardised versions of English longbows or Native American flatbows. For those so inclined I would recommend picking up copies of the traditional bowyers bible (vol 1-4) if you are considering learning this wonderful craft.
Here in Australia we are blessed with a few decent bow woods, Notably spotted gum in particular makes a very nice bow and is available from bunnings as flooring or decking. It’s also worth noting that in the ACT and southern NSW Osage orange, though not widely known, was introduced as a wind break by the yanks and as a result we do have some nice staves around.

A 70lb long bow is a totally different beast to a compound huh, it’s a terrific pass time and one that isn’t particularly well represented here in Aus. Fletching arrows and the like is good fun too. I have a pile of books on the subject which I haven’t opened in about 12 years but I can’t bring myself to part with them yet.

Well, plenty of spotted gum around my way. Just the truck, sliced as a pie-shape and nice, straight staves? Can post when/if I get the time..

Oh yeah, this longbow ive got can take out a grizzly bear given the right arrow and shot placement.
Dont be shy on the books, id be interested to give arrow making a try.
