So here’s my next rabbit hole. Basically my industry can see salaries anywhere from 80k - 500k per year and it seems a key factor to this is network. This past week I watched a coworker decide they where ready for a change so they dropped their notice in. The following day, as news had got out, they got about a call an hour, all from people they knew personally asking them to join their firm- these roles are all unadvertised. In the end they have accepted a part time role at $220k and won’t miss a day of pay.
The professional network, an under discussed prep.

“It’s not what you know it who you know”
That phrase didn’t come about for no reason. Half my income is from working in a paid role for an organisation and the other half is from my consultancy business and close to a 100% of my work has come from word of mouth for the last 15 years. I maintain a web presence but it is a small trickle of work from that vs previous clients and colleagues.
Networks are vital but I don’t think many in my wider network or client base would have my back in a true collapse situation.

The same thing happened to my daughter. She casually mentions she wants a change and job offers come rolling in. It's a relatively small circle in her field.
My network are mostly preppers, met over a decade of holding meets at my properties. They have become good friends and are all great people. All well balanced except for one real nutter, hey mate?

Agree with bce1. This stuff is great for financial independence, but work colleagues are rarely family or close friends. They usually live all over the place too.

BCE touched on a good point...I think our current, professional networks will be worth squat if there is a collapse. I guess you just need to decide if you think you need an alternative network for this scenario if it plays out.
It wont be about if you are competent and can further someones career above or below you on the food chain but what you have done to get through hard times and if you have skills to further this cause...and if you can help others in your "network".
Dunno, haven't thought about it much...

We have, thats why we are collecting together people who have the skills and knowledge to see the group through the coming disasters. The latest addition is a RN, or registered nurse. Others who have various skills know that there is a space for them WTSHTF, and include a mechanic and his son, and a horticulturalist. IT type people will be worth squat when it happens as computers and the internet will be worthless and not working.

I thought this was self evident but This isn’t a prep for when zombies come SHTF crap but rather the far more likely redundancy, firing or political disagreement where you refuse to comply with the rules. Being able to fall back on multiple standing job offers to make your primary source of income more resilient isn’t the most exciting, I mean linked in is boring AF but if it mena you can leverage it into an extra 50k PA… that’s a lot of beans n rice fellas.

Some people have done the hard yards and don't need to chase money or form employment based networks.

And the rest here probably don't care. I get where your coming from d but you have the wrong demographic for that question here. Career progression & networking within the current mainstream system? On a prepping site? "I would of thought it was self evident"

Absolutely correct. I refused to obey our increasingly authoritarian government. It affected my employment so I left. It was my contacts that put me into a better, higher paying job with a company who were quite happy to ignore the rules.

On a prepping site? "I would of thought it was self evident" Tbh I’ve been able to leverage my network to move roles where my schooling is paid for, security clearances all covered, WFH when I want all that kinda stuff and in the next few years my income is now on the lower end of the field rather than the higher. But I guess that’s not valuable, like a water barrel or a sweet lifestraw. Point is that with a little engagement in playing the game you are able to amplify the effects of your day job, you know, unless the idea of more money and better conditions is disagreeable for some reason

Last year I was walking down a street and saw about $20 cash on the ground. I didn't pick it up, I have enough money to get by, so I left it on the ground in the hope the next person to find it would need it more.

connections and social networking is important
Before my accident i could leave a job go home put the kettle on and before i had made a cuppa id get a call from someone saying they heard i might be available and was i interested in working for them since i have had the accident and its become clear my days on the hot seat are over i have had several people come forward and offer me modified positions where im more of an advisor and a couple just create a role for me to fill if i wanted it
So what should of been the end of my career has just turned into a new path thanks to contacts and connections
When the doctor hinted at looking at getting sorted to go on a disability pension i just thanked him and said nah im going back to work he looked a bit surprised but meh i have better things to do

Your error is assuming that money is the motivator, my motivator is actually flexibility and by having an income which allows for me to achieve the goals I want for myself as well as extras like my charitable goals then that’s what I’ll do. But also if I can have 200k as opposed to 50k for the same 37.5 hours each week, I’ll take the 200 every time and not just for the money. My expenses are about 50k PA. So why work a full week if I can do the same in two days. It’s just more efficient.

Parasites can be squished when necessary. But preppers are the absolute opposite of this. Well done to you sir. The pension is tiny anyway compared to what an even moderately skilled individual can earn.

They win taxpayer funded "government" contacts building public infrastrcture at 10 times the true cost and at 1/10 the speed of completion. They also take taxpayer funds to run private medical services and try and make the medical insurance industry "viable" (Which it isn't and never will be without taxpayer welfare to support them).

So why work a full week if I can do the same in two days. It’s just more efficient. Money is absolutely a motivator for me. I have a family to pay for a future to build. A lot of folks here have already been through the part that takes egg sucking to get comfortable. Some of us haven't yet finished that part. I now go where the (stable) money is. Bugger loyalty, I had that for over ten years and it got me a stagnant wage and no career growth. Our plan is to pay off a house in the next 5-10 years. Once that's done, we'll start looking at finding a bush block that suits our needs. We'll also do a bit of travel... If the world hasn't popped off yet that is! Then it'll be the long and glorious comforts that come along with earlier-than-most retirement. Without the money to fund that we won't get to do what we want. So I keep a pretty strong contact list and touch base with people regularly. You never know when someone's going to mention that job with A 50K pay bump that'll get you to your goals a couple of years faster.
