In another thread there was a discussion about the availability of game animals after SHTF. Rabbits were mentioned and it reminded me of a real danger that is probably not well known.
If rabbits are plentiful and you rely on them as your only source of protein, you could in fact end up sick and even die from lack of fat in you diet. It's not just rabbits, but any type of lean meat. Even a normally 'fatty' animal that has starved and used up it's fat reserves would be considered a lean meat in this regard. That's a real possibility in a severe or prolonged SHTF situation.

This could be a problem for many of those who wintered here in the far north bush.. Even if you had beef, bear, moose to get you through the winter without other sources of vitamins and all that goes with what is necessary many survived winter and such only to not make it because of the limited diet..
Up river from us there is a place preserved as a historic homestead site that was an important area where a homestead was started to service the river ferry.. This in the 1880s and later to service the Alaska gold rush and area settlement.. This all to include a general store and all to support the local area.. One thing they were most noted and important for was the potato fields they grew in the river delta along the area.. You can visit the historic buildings and all and still buy potatoes at the store today..

Rabbit is very lean meat, but if you are a true survivalist and eat the brains and other organs (heart, kidney, lungs liver etc).. one is supposed to get enough of the fats..... to survive and thrive.... There are plenty of weed that give vitamins and minerals but almost no carbs..

We're planning to chuck a dwarf macadamia tree in our front yard, and plenty of avos near us. A few other things will be good, but the reality is that it's variation that keeps us healthy. So a few different sources of each type of macro nutrient as well as micros are pretty important.

We keep backyard rabbits and they are a great addition to the backyard gardens. It is one of the few manures that can be used as fertilizer almost directly on plants without much composting and not burn plants. Easy to keep, easy to butcher. Mixed with lots of carbs and alternative fats and they can still be a very useful backyard addition.

We have not raised any meat rabbits for a bit over a year now.. We have so much canned and frozen rabbit to use up before raising more.. Sweetie pressure cans smoked roasted cube meat.. Roasted loose meat carcass trimmings, bone broth and heat and eat soups... Pretty much the same products from chicken... These products are very useful and versatile in a lot of bush recipes...
We will have to make more marmalade, berry jam, jelly this year.. Near as I can tell I just opened the last jar of apple, raisin marmalade... But all this is a different thread..

We keep a couple of miniature ! pigs for garden use. Little bulldozers they are, and we put them into a garden bed that needs to be turned over. They dig up all the roots, grass, etc, and turn over the beds ready for planting almost. Gotta have good fencing though and even electric fencing wont keep em in if they really want to go walkabout.
Its dj vu all over again.
