No dramas. Wasn't having a go at you at all (sorry if it came accross that way). All good bug, I definitely came on a bit strong because the US gun control debate frankly has me exhausted. I gotta practice that 'not my circus, not my monkeys' mantra a little more lmfao. I have a few US friends and it's been a hot topic for obvious reasons recently. Mea culpa!

In most places, suicides get counted in the 'gun crime' number. There's little evidence that an absence of guns reduces the suicide rate. There's a lot of evidence that an absence of a well funded mental health system increases the suicide rate. Japan has a lot of stigma around mental health. For a country with such an oppressive work culture, this is not a good thing. I am curious how many of Japan's gun related deaths were suicide.

That's a good point, I hadn't considered suicide's impacts on those numbers. Fair call. --- --- Valid point.. In the US, any gun suicide is considered violence incident.. Up here ...supposedly... gun suicides are not counted this way.. But I don't trust those crunching these numbers to not be part of an agenda...

I don’t take notice of gun deaths. I’m more interested in gun related murder and even more interested in gun mishaps leading to death this improving my own safe hendling. I think you’d find if you take out suicide that those numbers would halve then the stats basically mean nothing to the ordinary person. My point initially was, that, despite their already tough laws, there is talk about toughening them further. 1. If they worked well enough, they don't need to be tougher. 2. If they don't work well enough, why flog a dead horse by pushing tougher ineffective laws?
Suicides vs gun deaths: Last time I checked the Aust bureau of stats: 78% of gun deaths in oz are suicides. 5% of oz suicides use guns. This has been fairly consistent over decades. Gun murders peaked in 1968 (26 years pre JH's gun 'buyback') and dropped for no apparent reason thereafter.
So for 1000 suicides, 50 might use a gun. = approx 62 gun deaths (including 50 suicides)
= approx 12 gun related accidents, murders or bad guys justifiably shot by cops.
