Hi Preppers - what do you use for practice targets when shooting your firearm or bow at home / in the field?
Currently for 22lr I have a basic setup of a 3" AR500 plate and some tin cans hanging off an old saw horse in the paddock. I'm waiting on delivery of a recurve bow, but have packed a few empty feed bags with old clothes and towels and will secure with a cable tie with the idea of practicing archery. That and shooting at stumps is what I have in mind thus far.
Curious to know what others out there are using for targets in home/field based environment!

We have a range set up in a paddock. It has a dirt embankment about 3 meters deep behind the targets and extending about 500 mm above the targets in case of really bad shots ! There are 3 ranges marked , 10 meters, 30 meters, and for those who can see that far, 100 meters ! Targets are either a steel plate with paper targets, or a flip up set of bulls eyes that have 2 each side and a centre target that when hit, resets it so you don't need to walk up to it. The steel target is actually a couple of cast iron BBQ plates spaced apart by a few inches, and has stopped all the rounds thrown at it so far. (It does have a few holes in it though !). Weapons used so far have been the ubiquitous .22, a 303, 12 G shot gun, and a turn of the century (1900) Bruno 357. For kids, we drag out the .177 air rifle to teach young ones gun safety. The 12 G has been tested out with solid shot as well as the 22 and 50 cal adapters. Had 500 rounds of 22 ammo that was damp given to us and spent a few hours with some friends and family blowing through it, ultimately running out of daylight before ammo ! Neighbors also come over for a shoot every month or so, so its a good get together. Have sighted in all the rifles at 30 meters, as that's about as far as I can see ! Red dots sights, along with modest scopes help here. The red dot sights sure show you how much your aim sucks and wobbles around ! I also have a class C license, so can legally use a semi auto rifle, which is really good, providing you keep your paw away from the exit port ! What arrangements do others use ? I used to attend the gun range at Albion Park every week with my son when we lived down there, but the nearest range here is over 1 1/2 hours away.
Its so neat to see an Arduino say "Welcome to Macintosh".

Just be aware that in some (most?) states it is illegal to shoot targets with a firearm anywhere that isn't an approved range, except for the purpose of sighting in.

For sighting in purposes I use ar500 steel plates, of various sizes, and at various distances out to 1000m. They are tough plates, even stopped a .50cal DTA we used. For archery my son uses the rinehart 3d life size animal targets with replaceable vital zones. They are expensive, $600 to $900 for a deer, but he's one of the leading field archers in NSW. www.abbeyarchery.com.au/p/RTT3DAC00152/Rinehart+Spike+Buck.htmlIn the old days we used old boogie boards as an archery target.

Now that's a good backstop! I'm on pretty flat ground so use our dam wall when sighting in.
Sounds like your son's right onto his archery. I got my 9yo son a youth bow for his birthday, figured I would get one aswell to spend some time together in the paddock.

For archery targets on the cheap get some cardboard boxes free from Bunnings and tape them to a hay bale.

I have a yellow dinner bell out at 700m. When I ring it it is time to say goodbye to the ferals. Weird how they hang around at a range where the .308 is precisely sighted in.

In our lower pasture I have several options.. A 50 meter range into a dirt bank.. I built a bench on a wood pallet that I can set at 25 meters using the pallet forks on the tractor loader.. I also have 100 meters available across the pasture the other direction..
For targets we mostly use a 20 cm paper plate with about a 5 cm black sharpie marker dot in the middle.. From a garage sale I got 2 hard steel plate targets about 15 cm in diameter.. These were $5 each.. Do not have them set up yet, but plan to set one at the 100 meter spot.. And set the other at the bottom of the other paddock that will be 110 meters to the fence from the back porch..
