Let me first start out saying, we all are on the same mission of surviving a possible collapse of our economy plus whatever catastrophic event(s) may happen. Therefore I am here to bring to light something that many are missing in their preparation.
Basic needs: as humans, these are things in which all of us need to be preparing for in any possible short to long term emergency situation. Food, Water, Shelter, Clothing, Security, and Health would be considered our basic needs in survival. We focus on these needs in preparing for any situation that would make it hard for us not easily attain them. I agree with preparing, but in retrospect, how long and what are you preparing for? What I mean by that is how long you expect to be in this said “survival situation?” Do you expect the emergency situation to be able to bounce back sooner or later? These are important questions, though they cannot be answered, they can be considered in how you prep.
Everyone is a master of his/her own survival and therefore they obviously know best when the fact is that everyone is different. Some are great at hunting, others cultivating, etc….. But to those who think they can do it all on their own, consider this….. When your “supplies” run out, then what? You followed all the survival advise from those who survived lost for 3 weeks in the wilderness, military vets, etc….. so….. you have everything you need correct? The answer is a big no. Yes, your supplies will run out and, in some cases, taken by those, who out of fear, are not getting their and/or their family’s own needs met. This is even in the best case scenarios in after math recovery.
You have stocked up on over the counter and prescription meds (A large back pack full that you have collected the last couple of years?) All in which are pharmaceutical made (I am only assuming since we are a generation that has known nothing other than Advil, Penicillin, etc). Please know I am not putting this out there to dismiss the need of stock piling of these things, especially for those who are now life dependant on some medications. I am only stating that these supplies will run out eventually and without the knowledge of caring for your health absent of them you will be like a fish out of water. People will suffer of ailments that could easily be fixed by a decongestant, a fever that got too high because they did not have Acetaminophen (Ibuprofen, Motrin etc.), the list can go on sadly.
Ok, now that I have made my point, let me go on to say that what you are missing in your preparation is the knowledge of how to actually live off the land and use the God given resources that was provided to us. Natural medicine has been used for thousands of years and has proven to work (though major companies (and our government) try and make it seem like it does not).
“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wounds of my people?” Jeremiah 8:22. Now in the Bible, this verse is referencing the spiritual wounds of God’s people, but this is what was said to us in order to us understand the need of healing (physical, mental, spiritual).
Did you know that thousands upon thousands of people died of scurvy for multiple generations in the past? Scurvy is a vitamin C deficiency disorder that is easily preventable and correctable. With knowledge of how to maintain your health and natural medicine, you would know that the pesky weed stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) that you spend money to get from growing in your yard, drive ways etc is EXTREMLY rich in vitamin C along with vitamins A, iron, potassium, manganese, and calcium. Pine needles are also a very good source of vitamin C and calcium. Just these two things alone could have saved thousands of people.
“Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits all those who see the sun. Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom preserves the life of its possessor”. Ecclesiastes 7: 11-12”
I am an herbalist, not a hunter, fighter, etc. I do not have guns, nor will I show aggression to anyone who needs my help. But what I do have that over 95% of our modern population does not have and I am willing to share with anyone who wants to learn is a way to live off and with the land to maintain a healthy life; not just survive until supplies run out.
As you prepare, do not forget to collect information on how to use nature to heal and stay healthy. Just “any” food and water alone will not guarantee a healthy and long life and/or be safe for that matter. I for one would not want to sit and watch a family member or friend pass on because of the lack of knowledge and care for their health. Our pharmaceuticals will not last forever, and /or bounce back quick enough after a catastrophe hits before masses die off due to dependency and lack of options. Collect and gain knowledge to sustain a healthy life without them. May God be with you and your family!
