On a whim... On the way home from town this afternoon I got a bag of dark red Bing cherries.. These from the southern part of the province, dark dark red, sweet and do restrain your self from eating out of the bag as too many will cause "issues".....
Kind of expensive in todays world, but Sweetie usually cans some that later get made into out of this world jam, waffle and pancake topping and the like...

I need to do some beans this weekend. I buy dry beans and have a decent stock of them, but I rarely soak them to use at a later date. Still gotta get a hold of more jars though. There's a local farmer's market near the new place that has 300ml (at least, I think they're 300 ml?) mason-jar style ones for overnight oats. The idea is that you buy the overnight oats and then return the jars for re-use. But I expect they anticipate people buying the jars and not returning them and they likely factor that into the pricing.
Needless to say with jars being a hard to find commodity I think I'll be keeping mine, thanks very much! Lol.

I canned blueberry jam yesterday and plan on canning peach pie filling today. Storm came through night before last and lightning took out my peach tree loaded with peaches. Scrambling to salvage what I can.

I believe I have brought up the last known jar of peach peal jam from our cold room.. I'm hoping we can find some nice fruit this season.. I'm going to imagine price will be an issue..
I have not been in a store for 3 (?) weeks now, so I have no idea what the status of canning supplies is like..

Tim I also have not made a good grocery run in about 8 weeks myself as I tend to live out of my gardens this time of year but prior to that canning supplies were well stocked for the first time in 2 years. Plenty of jars, plenty of lids and such. Price wise there was a small increase in price depending on where you shop but not as much as I expected. Most of the price increases from what I have noticed have been in the produce to put in those jars and it's availability. I have never been so thankful as I am this year to have invested the time and expense I have in my own gardens, bushes and trees. The peach tree mentioned on the other hand is not salvageable. I have already started cutting it up and burning the limbs as I strip them. Stone fruit such as peaches truly struggle in this climate and I will not replant one but rather replace with a more hardy selection to the area. Maybe a couple pear trees as they do tend to do much better. I will miss the peaches because I use the leaves medicinally as a drawing poultice that works really well.

One reason why we never continued with canning was the cost of new lids. back when we were into it they were over $1each. At that time i could buy a tin can of what ever for under $1. Things may have changed but the economics was not favourable back then. The reusable lids look like a good compromise.

Reusable lids are harder to find than pistol powder in Australia, unless you want to mortgage your house or sell your children to pay the excessive postage costs from the US.

Or... A large order will require large shipping cost, however split among several people will it be cheaper in the long run than each individual ordering ??
I can't help but think if there is a will, there will be a way to make it cheaper..
Experience, ideas, thoughts... ??

Experience? Agree with frostbites comments and have had the same thing happen to me. ideas? your idea Tim is probably the best but the practicality is a bit low as there will be 2x postage costs and mucking about. Thoughts? unless availability increases tin cans, are the way to go. sad but true. I guess that is where dehydration takes its place here in Australia.

Wild game canning....
OK... Dirddiva mentioned canning venison.. I remember my mom, grandma, aunt canning raw pack cube venison and North American antelope... Sweetie and I have a substantial stock of canned rabbit, smoked rabbit, and other rabbit recipes, soups and the like...
On another forum a poster there listed how she canned roo meat.. Any of you blokes do that ?? Some have said wild camel is good ?? Good canned ?? Some have said wild bull is not good tasting... List experience please..
My mom used to can a venison mince meat pie filling that was WONDERFUL... I still miss that.. As I remember the recipe...
Roasted, ground venison Black currents Other (candied fruits?) Spices
A quart, liter jar of that made a big 2 crust pie and a small soup bowl size pie.. It got eaten up quickly.. Anyone make a pie filling similar ?? Recipe to share ??
One of my favorite things is to make ground raw meat and breakfast sausage seasoning logs.. Logs a bit bigger than a banana.. Smoke to well done beef internal temp in an aluminum foil boat in the Bradley smoker..

Overrun with raspberry's, blueberry's and mulberry's, caner going at full speed, as is the dehydrator units.
Jam making in full speed, she who must be obeyed is spending lots of time preserving.
Anyone else got the urge to increase preps ?

] Anyone else got the urge to increase preps ? Enjoy this moment of your life before it becomes a memory you wish you hadn’t taken for granted. Yep. It's fairly clear that Australia and the USA, at least, are preparing for war with China. As an island nation facing off against the world's largest navy, I'd say it's a safe bet there's going to be shortages of everything if hostilities kick off. Real shortages that make the empty shelves during the pandemic pale in comparison.

Add in the mad North Korean leader, and the world is set for chaos as has not been seen since the 1950's. Its only gunna take one idiots finger to slip and its all over, mad max on steroids. Then there is the elder abused Biden and these mid term elections, and it doesn't matter who wins, the result will be challenged for year perhaps. I just hope that someone sensible has taken the red button from him.
Dark has mass. When dark goes into a dark sucker, friction from this mass generates heat. Thus it is not wise to touch an operating dark sucker.
