Australia is one of the few countries in the world that can close it's boarders and still sustain itself

Can we self-sustain without fuel to run the tractors and transport? I say we could only do so if we moved everyone out of the city and a whole bunch of people learned what it is like to work for a living

We could not sustain all 20-odd million people IMO, we could sustain a lot of them given time to re-jig our agriculture etc, but you won't have time. Society as a whole is the frog in the warm water, we have no need to get out because it's nice and comfortable, so reverting to say 3 million people and ox-drawn ploughs ain't gonna happen.

Not so long ago, 90%+ of the people were on farms, now it's about 5%. We don't really have the ox or horses, nor the tack equipment for them, nor the skill-sets to plough fields with them anymore. I'm sure in 5-10 years that would change, people are wonderful at adapting, given time and desperation. So if fuel were not there in some way shape or form, we'd have at most 3 weeks to get people into the fields and the few wood-powered/horse powered vehicles ought switch to transport of food. Basically to change the mindset of a whole society in 3 weeks or so would be impossible. So whilst I think we could use similar farming practices to produce the food [though do by hand] in practice we couldn't harvest or plant enough and sure the 3 million figure might be right. What's obvious is that with any interruption in supply there's going to be a HUGE number of very hungry desperate people.
