Hi Everyone! The Lost Trades Fair is coming up in March - it's been booted from Kyneton to Bendigo Racecourse. I'm hoping to drag our family (and maybe some of our extended family) and low-key try and get them interested in actual productive hobbies (the 8yo has been reading Robin Hood type stuff so he's keen to see the bowyer in action!) Have you been before? Are you going to go this year? Which "Lost Trades" are most valuable to learn or steer people towards (other than baking, yummm) For those who are a bit lost and not sure what i'm talking about, the website is www.losttradesfair.com.au/ [updated, sorry for the broken link earlier] and their facebook is at www.facebook.com/losttrades/

Ohhh SO many trades that we're going to need if SHTF! Blacksmithing, wood turning (although not as much, it's still less practiced than it used to be) wool spinnning, making cloth from plants OURSELVES like linen and cotton, stone masonry, leatherworking, ... lots of things that I would imagine will be on show. I haven't been to that show myself but it's definitely something I'd love to go to.
Another thing that's really good to go to are medieval festivals and historical events because the majority of things on display there are things that people will need in the future but likely known nothing about. It's a great way to get ideas of basic skills to pick up.

Yup, and sparkies who know how to repair electrical equipment, sawmills and the like, as without electric, civilization isn't going to recover very quickly at all.
Edison needed a very high vacuum in his darksuckers. (This is commonly referred to as HiHo.)

I’m not permitted to go to any of those fairs because whenever I see one advertised I start yelling at the mrs: ‘wench, bring my mead’

Maybe people could learn to set the time on their VCRs?

That doesn't sound one bit like something you'd say! Ha Ha!! To be fair, I’m usually wearing a long blonde wig and carrying a large axe when I say it. The wig gets mrs frostbite excited, but my bad ‘I’ll chop wood until I’m thor’ pun usually kills the moment.

I found gold at the tip this afternoon.
Not physical gold, but gold none the less.
Whilst scavenging at the tip is prohibited, the tip master looks the other way if you want to wander around it. And, its only open 2 days a week, so things accumulate.
Picked up several items.
2 small solar panels, unbranded and unmarked. tested at home, one gives 11.5 volts at 350 ma in full sun, the other 6.6 volts at 370 ma in full sun. Add them in series and u can have 16 odd volts at around 350 ma, more than enough to keep a battery on an electric fence charged, or the battery on your tractor topped up. Or, run some solar powered lights, yes, u can buy them cheaply, but what happens when they die ? At least if you've put them together yourself u can fix em.
A 12 volt to 240 volt, 500 watt sine wave inverter. The power switch on the front panel is U/S, simple fix, just bypass it and use an external switch. Will be used to make a small stand alone solar system for my honey extraction gear in the bee caravan.
A 12 volt, 40 amp battery charger. The positive lead was chewed up and broken inside the unit. A new set of leads and away it goes.
A 1/2 acre Yard Master bug zapper, still in its original box. Old school this one. A UV fluorescent lamp and the starter was U/S. Pure unobtainium, but I have several dozen brand new starters in the shed. Fixed in less than 5 minutes. New price over $100.
A Fuji film electronic camera, with a SD card still inside. Needs 3 AA battery's, and I'm charging them at present. I don't need a camera, but it has the display built in and most of these were quite infra red sensitive and will work in the dark as cheap nite vision devices. Will it work ? Don't know yet, but who cares, it will just go back next tip trip if it doesn't.
Equipment like that above will be gold after a collapse. Especially solar/inverters/chargers. Yes, u need some knowledge to fix them, and some gear can be dangerous, the bug zapper has 6,000 volts inside, but I'm a trained professional, don't try it yourself !
Last was a nearly new, 6 stud, Landcruiser, 7.50 X 16 wheel and rim. The split rim is rusted out, but the Tyre is nearly new and will do as a spare for my farm Ute as I don't have a spare Tyre for it. Its even still got 20 psi in it !
'Stuff', like that above, will make life more bearable in the future when its just not available at any price.
Darksuckers get hot as they suck dark. The amount of dark sucked per second (the power of the darksucker) is measured in the units who (W) named after a famous British doctor.

I'm kid free that weekend so I might go along. Probably camp nearby on the Sat night if it's not too packed out (it is Labour Day long weekend)

Finally got the time to check out the Fuji digital SLR camera I rescued from the tip last week. It actually works, fired up first go. Now to see what its low light performance is like. I have a dozen or so IR remote controllers, and the IR leds in them will probably be OK. So I can make some IR illumination for zero cost, have a digital sensor for zero cost, and can make a nite vision monocular for almost zero cost. Admittedly, it may require IR illumination, but then the cheapie nite vision also does, and anything is better than nothing. Stealth is not the object here, as anything with external IR illumination is visible to anyone with a modern camera in their phone etc. Any miscreants slinking around after dark will be in for a shock anyway.
Every gun owner should have a 12 gauge in their gun cabinet right next to their 22 rifle. With a elastic strap and at least 6 rounds in the strap, along with a 22 and 9 mm adapter.

Tip trip today.....3 off 175 watt solar panels, unbroken but a few scratches on the glass. Tested at 100% functional as per nameplate details. Cost... $ 0.00 Heard on the news that Australia scraps 40,000 tons of solar panels every year, yes, 40,000 tons. That's approximately a million panels per year and by 2035 that's expected to be over 100,000 metric tons per year. www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/recycling-and-reducing-waste/product-stewardship/national-approach-to-manage-solar-panel-inverter-and-battery-lifecyclesMe smells a business there. Get 'em, test 'em (easily done), resell to those who need them in the bush. Considering that my first solar panel I bought over 45 years ago, cost me $650 and delivered 60 watts at 12 or 24 volts, the fact that there are so many being scrapped is wasteful of resources. Yes, the newer panels are more efficient, perhaps lighter and more powerful, but if one gets the panels for virtually nothing, the disadvantages of needing more panels for the same output is offset by the almost zero cost. The only extra cost is mounting frames, and if you DIY, even hardwood timber will work. I'm dam sure that a lot of people in the outback, or even on their bush blocks, who cant afford, or the Council cant afford, to supply them with electric power, would love the chance for electricity. Yes, battery's, regulators, inverters are still required, but with all these second hand panels, surely there is a market that someone can capitalize on ? Not even considering the benefits to society of less land fill and a better standard of living. I'm far to old to consider that sort of enterprise now, but some of you younger people, have a think about it. Imaginary sins are conjured out of thin air to convict the innocent while those guilty of the most egregious fraud and corruption are lauded as saviors.
