Thankyou for all the comments so far - have been reading anonymously.......................................... Packing an 'evac bag' is like a low-key version of an INCH bag: you hope you're never gonna need it, but if something happens and you're corralled, either we're screwed if it's a genocide camp or prison anyway, but if it's just an "evac center" or equivalent, having some key items handy (a combo lock?) will make life easier. For things like micro-SD's with books etc on it, a small tablet that can read them, and a solar, USB battery pack or some other kind of recharger: those things take time to find or order, but they aren't necessarily hugely expensive. They are still within reach still at the moment. In another year or two they may be unobtanium. Emergency bag is generally referred to as a 72 hour kit. In local emergencies the first 72 hours are critical. After that it is almost 100% survival, EQ, floods, fire, cyclones etc.. The it is back to your residence if it is still there. Most disasters people have plenty of warning, but just don't take thins seriously. I remember working in far north WA on a short term contract, a cyclone was predicted 5 days out. After the weather event past people were complaining that the went to the supermarkets to get bread and food like an hour prior to landfall and could not find any (sold out) and some shops were closed. There is often plenty of time to leave, but people que up at fuel stations etc. minutes before they have to leave. Emergency services constantly you need to leave early. Ukraine most ignored the warning of a Russian invasion and were left starving - normalcy bias in play.

Ive been watching some u tube vids re car and truck crashes. The part that is interesting is the closeness of dwellings in most towns and cities, and I cringe when I see high rise buildings with many people presumably in them. What hope have they got WTSHTF ?
Putting myself in their place, they have nowhere to go, probably little or no backup food or energy supply, water, waste disposal and so on. Do they realize it ?
Perhaps after TSHTF, those nasty types who have nothing and expect others to provide for them using force to make it happen, will eventually die out, leaving the rest of us alone. Perhaps they will concentrate on town dwellers and by the time they get to us, we will be even more better prepared to meet them. Hence safety in being many km from a town, with a means of self defense, supply's and basic need meeting equipment.
Has any one else scouted around their retreat to determine the best place to sit and wait ? Obviously, a unobstructed view is the ideal, with shelter. Ive built a series of small sheds, for the farm animals to stay in if they want, in several strategic places.
Anyone else had a think about the surveillance aspect of their survival preps ? How long do you think you may need to be extra vigilant for ? A week, month, year ? It will probably mean sleeping during the day, leaving the surveillance to others during that period, and observing at night, which is usually when the nefarious types want to strike out.
If you get some IR NV gear, get used to using it at night. Visually things are totally different as its not in real colors, B & W or various colors according to heat radiance, so it takes a bit of effort to interpret what you are seeing, or even to walk around without falling over. Carrying a rifle makes it even more difficult and dangerous. It can also be useful during the day, especially for a camouflaged person. You can't hide !! My gear is supposed to be able to function for 20 hours on one charge, but a spare battery is a must. I opted for a monocular, with a homemade adapter for heads up and a rifle scope fitting, although they do not recommend this one for use on a rifle due to recoil, a .22 doesn't have much recoil and when paired with a decent scope, makes a pretty awesome weapon.
Get your troops to help you by acting as a baddie and getting used to how a person looks vs a kangaroo or similar. From a distance, both could look similar and you need to be able to interpret what you are seeing quickly in a grid down situation.
I am also surprised that the powers that be haven't banned IR nite vision gear, its a game changer technology. Like they do for anything that has a prepping use.
In this choking atmosphere of toxic hubris, self-righteousness, indignation, entitlement and resentment, humility is for losers, prudence is for losers, caution is for losers, skeptical inquiry is for losers.

I'm really, really NOT concerned about security against criminal types and grid-down scenarios. Hollywood propaganda has generated this fear. On Ones own property One does not need high tech for protection. Physical deterence measures and strength in numbers works fine in third world places.
Be more concerned about how we will deal with a well organised, state backed force with full military capability who are here to stay and do not fear implementing genocide. They are somewhere in our collective future.

Good point, the first thing such a force will do is confiscate the weapons from private peoples. They know where they all are, locked in a cabinet, whose got them, compulsory licensing, and they will simply take them, leaving most defenseless.
Nobody watches you harder than the people that don’t like you. Give them a show.

My intention is to wait in one of the animal shelter sheds, observing, with my ears. I also have a super-ear parabolic listening device I built many years ago, and when I hear something, will point it towards the source. If its people bent on bad deeds, they could give away information when they are talking, especially if they don't realize someone is listening. And the gear has a range of at least 300 meters, clear as day for a whisper. Then its nite vis gear for ID, then the Bullhorn telling them they've been sprung and to F... off, I know who u are and where u come from, a warning shot from the 12g buckshot 10 meters in front of them, and tell them that this property is protected 24/7, and to tell all their mates the next time I wont miss.
Stealth and intel gathering will be important.
They fear love because it creates a world they can't control.

I hope that animal shed has some ballistic protection (like sand bags) because as soon as you confront the bad guys you may get some incoming rounds.

I'm relying on stealth, I can see them, they probably wont be able to see me. If they can, or have nite vis gear, then there's not much we could do anyway, but I'm betting most will be towners, looking for food etc, and carrying the clothes on their backs. I keep in the shadows, and only move if needed. Besides, sitting right beside me is the 22, fully loaded and cocked, so I still have the advantage.
The 12 g muzzle flash would be a give away, so immediately I fire it off, I move to another location, and once again, listen in.
I have the advantage of surprise.
Don’t worry about being lonely at the top. It can be lonely at the bottom too.

When I owned that 1250 acre block on the NSW/QLD border I went into the local rural trader and checked out his ammo cabinet. Heaps of 7.62 x 39 on the shelf, made me think a lot of the local boys had kept their skk’s and sks during the buyback. Rural raiders will be fairly well armed. I wouldn’t want to confront a thief carrying a Russian or Chinese assault rifle and a torch unless I was behind cover rather than concealment.

SHHHHHhhhhh....
That assumes that there are people around you, and the nearest, apart from the neighbor across the road, are many km away, separated by state forests, so the danger here will be from blow ins from town (55km away, over two mountains).
Nite vision is the multiplier.
Enjoy this moment of your life before it becomes a memory you wish you hadn’t taken for granted.
