A quick search didnt reveal much on this topic. Just wondering how many peeps are ADV bike riders here? Its a path I went down recently for a number of reasons including economical travel, off road ability and some carrying capacity. I wouldnt see it as a primary bug out vehicle ... although some people might see it as such depending on your plan.

When I bought my first property, I thought it would be a refuge for WTSHTF, 40 years ago.......
I went through several bikes, a Kawasaki KV100, Honda XL 250 etc, until I bought a Honda XL 500, the biggest cc trail bike available at the time.
I went lots of places on that bike, both on holidays and off road trail riding and it was great. Even though I rode the bike the 80 km round trip to work every day, I set it up for a bug out vehicle, with an extra clip on fuel tank giving over 1,000 km range, extra lighting, bigger 12 v battery, automatic chain oiler, CB radio etc.
After riding it for over 30 years, I would never buy a bike with a chain drive, too much maintenance on the chain, replacing it every 6 months or so, and sprockets, although I found the nylon sprockets very good, but when the chain jumps, its goodby sprocket as well, so I had to keep the chain adjusted properly. Shaft drives have torque turning issues, but a lot less maintenance, and tires wear quite quickly when used on the road. I solved that one by using a road tire on the bike, and it also rode better as well.
Tracers work...in both directions.

FJR1300 is current sled...not really Adventure but I get around paved surfaces quite competently.
Maybe a BMW GS is on the go for future riding more off the beaten track...

I've recently been planning / prepping my Honda 400 Quad for some extended hunting opportunities in the NT / Nth Qld, my nephew has access to some serious hunting country up there and eventually I'll be taking full advantage of it before he finally stops asking me! I just love gear like this from the MXStore they've got some awesome stuff:- DESERT FOX OVERLAND 6L FUEL CELL PETROL BLADDER

Yeah I did a lot of research in the usual places before pulling the trigger on a Tiger 900 as pictured. Was initially leaning towards the 850GS but I felt the brakes were better on the Tiger. Now I'm getting myself acquainted with a powerful, top heavy bike doing its own thing in sand while I 'go with the flow'. Getting there, got plenty of terrain to practise on.

Ideal bug out bike ? How about a Honda CT-90, or 110 ?.....Old school, points and coil ignition, EMP/CME proof, easy to fix, parts available on almost every farm, and lets face it, how far are u gunna be running to ? A few hundred KM to your BOL, then you wont be going anywhere else as to drive any vehicle afterwards will invite trouble. And they are designed to carry a load, have dual range transmission, economical and woefully under-powered !
But your aim is for a bike you can use for fun now, everyday and the CT is rather specialized.
Just kidding !!

My issue with a lot of the "Adventure" stuff is they are all so heavy. And then everyone accessorises them up another 50kg! Yes, you have a lot of power with a lot of the larger stuff but it doesn't mean much when its slippery, sandy or really rough terrain.
I have a friend with a new 700 Tenere (which is a nice ride - after suspension upgrades) who is trying to get me over to the dark side...but I like the lone wolf, effortless, distance consuming abilities of the FJR, albeit limited to paved roads.

Gotta be honest, the non-moto side of me looked at that and thought "Now THAT looks fun!" before I even thought of the bug out considerations for it hahaha. Personally I'd go a rugged 4wd first but that's because I have a tribe of turdlings to cart around if SHTF. It does seem like the kind of thing that would be extremely useful if you have a large bug out property though.

I used to have a DR650 which I added a long-range Acerbis tank and upgraded the radiator cover to punch plate steel to offer better stick protection. Ended up selling it as I never rode it and couldn't be bothered paying the rego

For me the bike will do regular 3hr commutes between our propertied so I wanted something highway cable in wet & dry conditions as well as being offroad capable. The money I'll save in fuel will make the bike ownership cost effective. In the event that we face ectended fuel shortages, the bike will be a real asset.

Still working it out of course but it does put a smile on the dial.

I don’t get excited about any motorcycle with less than 200hp.

I don’t get excited about any motorcycle with less than 200hp. Hahah I had a shiz-eating grin on my face the first time I rode my electric pushbike! They're stupid fun, but ridiculously underpowered compared to most anything bigger than a lawn mower 🤣🤣🤣. There's just something ridiculously fun about scooting around on something that keeps your face in the wind no matter how big or small it is. I get a bit like a dog with its head out the window I suppose. Probably a Labrador. I'm not terribly smart. 😅 That's a pretty speccy looking bike too, reminds me of the Gerber Paraframe knives. I did giggle at their 'Bond' edition one though. I have a cricut machine, just give me the word and I'll make a couple of 007 vinyls for you for free and increase the bike's value by a few $K lmao. A moto in general is probably never going to be on the cards for me. Bung knees means that even leaning over when stationary would be rough, it's difficult enough with my 25kg ebike. But I'm not adverse to checking out an ATV in the future if we have more space to get around on a property. Being able to tow a small trailer would be a huge draw card too. I guess it's a different use to being able to move quickly on or off road though, afaik you can't take an ATV on the roads legally in normal times. SHTF and that might change though!

seriously considered buying this, a celebration of the 1994 model Fireblade I owned before the Yamaha R1 was released. 217hp, but the $55k price tag put me off. This thing is sexier than a hot blonde s w e d ish backpacker in a bikini

Any vehicle on the road after TSHTF will be a target, so we will not be driving anywhere, except maybe the neighbors. That will change after the big die off and farmers markets get up and running in the country areas. Cities will be dead ends, literally.
