There doesnโt seem to be much traffic on Ausprep these days.
If it wasnโt for MWATโs prolific posting this place would be pretty much dead.
885 members and only a small handful post regularly.
Two very good posters, Dirtdiva and Dr Jenner, seem to have left. Milspec rarely treats us with a visit. Even Norseman the Crazy has been quiet lately (Feds got you scared mate?).
I donโt bother with regular retreat updates anymore either, because they donโt seem to generate much discussion. Which is the core issue in my opinion.
Far too many lurkers here who want to take from our combined knowledge and experience but arenโt prepared to contribute anything. Forums donโt work that way. If only a handful of members contribute they eventually get over it, then the forum dies.
Not wanting to contribute to a group effort isnโt a trait that any prepper should have.

You're right frost. It's been very quiet lately. I haven't posted a lot purely because there's not much to say because I haven't been up to much which doesn't really help the situation. It could be that it's partly because prepping tends to wind in a bit during winter when we're all hiding from the cold. You definitely should keep up the retreat updates though, I really enjoy seeing what you've achieved and getting ideas for what I can do with my own property... When we finally get one!
I suspect there are a few lurkers. It can be intimidating to dip your toes in sometimes, especially when it seems like you're broaching a group of people who seem to know each other quite well. But I think forums also go through cycles of quiet and active. It's happened a few times over the last few years here too. And I suspect that with all of those members there's probably only 20-50 that could be called 'active'. I guess we all just have to make a bit more effort to keep the conversation going.

I too have thought that for the past few days, no new posts for sometimes 24 hours or so.
I believe if you belong to some group, its up to you to support it, that's why I left the local ham radio club, I didn't have the time to support and participate in activities.
Maybe everyone has got their s..t together and doesn't need any advice or information ?

The Feds can Get Fugged, they don't scare me, even the State and Federal Wallopers past and present that inhabit this place I don't give a toss about! I have been posting snippets here and there but there's just very little discussion, the next phase of WW3 when it kicks off will liven it up a bit I'm sure!

I'd expect nothing less from you norse! Hahaha! But Frost makes a good point. We sure a huge uptick of activity when Covid happened, and it continued for a solid 6-12 months afterwards when things were settling. People realised that being prepared was important. But as usual, it's easier to let things fall into a 'too hard basket' when life starts and gets kicking. But it's really up to the old hands to keep the discussion going when being prepared is no longer the flavour of the month. It's difficult though. When you've been doing it for a long time you tend to not really have a whole lot new to talk about. It's already all been said after all! But that's where we fall into a trap because we're less likely to learn knew things if we don't question our assumptions or current set ups. Lets drive a few more threads with a few more questions and hopefully we'll see a bit more action. I definitely feel more inspired and get more done when I see a post from someone saying they've done something smart. It makes me get off my back end and try to get something similar done myself

I'm trying to do that by posting what I consider interesting 'stuff', perhaps it isn't 'interesting' any more ?

I'm trying to do that by posting what I consider interesting 'stuff', perhaps it isn't 'interesting' any more ? I think sometimes people forget that prepping isn't just "I bought this thing to put away for later". It's also "I dug holes today to sink posts for better fencing so that when the rabbits are breeding they have less chance of getting at our garden-based food preps". Perhaps saying WHY you did what you did specifically from a prepping perspective will help folks who don't realise that fact to connect the dots a bit better. That way they can see how your actions are based in prepping rather than seeing what they think is just a list of chores. For example, when I talk about working in my garden I try to bring it back to "I'm planting this specific species because it's a cut and come again plant, so it will provide us with a long-term food source in case of food scarcity". Or as mentioned in the diary post, I'm trying to find shading and bug solutions that work in the extreme heat. As we've already realised there's plenty in the media about how it's going to be a brutal summer. Someone who's new to prepping might not realise that there's also a lot of talk in the prepping community about crop failures and food insecurity being far more likely because of the increase in temps. When I post in my freezedryer thread, I generally try to discuss what I've saved and why. For example I mention that it can be difficult to store fat and as a result we're looking for long term fat options that don't require freezedrying. Actually that reminds me, I'm going to have to update that thread because there's been a bit of a snafu with the machine! Point is, trying to educate others on prepping and what it can do for you doesn't really achieve anything if you don't write out in black and white why you're doing what you're doing. Old hands might know instinctively and not need any explanation but new folks appreciate the 'why' of it all to make it usable info for their own experience. Seeing regular people talking about it and how they plan to prepare for that makes for more relatable reading than "I'm planning to put up shade cloth for my plants this week". That doesn't really generate any interaction because no one has reason to discuss the topic beyond basic gardening chat. Throwing "Because of the expected brutal summer we're going to have" will prompt people to ask ' Why is it going to be brutal? Who expects it?" and they might be inclined to either ask more questions or research more. And that's what we really want at the end of the day. Education and information.

Not sure its dying - it does wax and wane a little bit - I think many are busy. I am regularly doing 60-65 hr weeks when 18 months ago I was doing 50. Family life is busy. I just need to motivate myself as personally I see collapse coming at speed - I accept that isnt everyones views - but these sort of forums are important IMO. But I have had another forum I really enjoy die - largely down to the one guy who did most of the work just disappearing (hope he didnt die). Do forums have a shelf life? I not so sure, I have been involved in survivalist forums since newsnet days - wish I was cleaver enough to monteise it like JWR did, he was just another pleb on newsgroups. Im not sure how you revitalise things. The good news is it hasnt spiraled to shit the same way Aussurvivalist did. I enjoy your posts Frostbite - but I dont comment on them. Ditto I enjoy (most ) of MWTs posts. I have really enjoyed the freeze dryer saga. I think its it worth the effort. I still enjoy the forum, but usually only post or respond if I have something to add.

I've slacked off in the colder months and it's hard to get motivated with plans that require at least somewhat decent weather to make a move on. It's especially tricky when most of the prepping youtubers are currently reaping crops that they've started many many months ago, or they live in subtropical areas so their gardens are booming and crops are constant! But seeing a few more posts today and catching up on a few videos that I thought were pointless (due to the weather) has motivated me today so hopefully I'll get a bit more done than I have in the last few months ๐

I'm one who hasn't looked at the forum much over the last month and I can't remember when I last posted anything. I've been concentrating on my new relationship, which is going gangbusters! Is that excuse enough? ๐๐ We have quite a bit in common, including our passion for food gardening. I've also been very busy making marmalade, jams, chutneys and more with fruit he keeps bringing me. I don't like to waste it because we all know what the future looks like.

I will try and explain the reasoning behind the technical posts I do. I didn't think anyone would be interested in my reasoning behind them, but perhaps there are those who are interested in the logic behind decisions.
Who is going to confiscate those weapons? Once you start going door to door confiscating weapons the new Civil War will have officially started. Do these morons understand that?

I recently did a final batch of lilipili jam and it was my best to date. Given I've only done one season of them I've definitely learnt a lot. No rhubarb. Ok I KNEW that wasn't going to work well but I really wanted to try rhubarb with lilipili! For reference, it's delicious. But definitely a bit liquidy because of course rhubarb messes with the pectins. The last lot I added a lot more cinnamon to the recipe as well as a bit more ginger and it's fantastic.

I've been flat strap with work for the last 2 weeks and the month before that recovering from a major operation. I still check in each day and have a read and maybe a quick post or two as I find something worth sharing. On the prepping side of things I've ben busy collecting bits and pieces for 4wd mods to the car so been busy researching stuff for that and shopping around for good deals.

I got grapefruit and more oranges from my brother and lemons from my sister. I've got a huge lilly pilly tree in the front yard, so made jelly with those. Only got the last of the lilly pilly because I was distracted and forgot about it. I've made 4 kinds of marmalade, persimmon jam, fig, almond and ginger jam and fig, apple and ginger chutney. I've got more fruit to make up, but i've taken a break so that I can get more gardening and other things ๐ done. I'm going to dry orange, lime and citrus for drinks, flavouring and to dip in chocolate.

I used to really dislike most anything that was super heavily ginger-based when I was younger but I guess enough tastebuds have died off that it's no longer too intense for me to cope with hahaha. And I'll admit, one of the best things is when my middle sprout goes to my inlaws and makes chocolate dipped freeze dried strawberries with grandma. I'm really tempted (once the machine is working again!) to freezedry slices of lime to be dipped because I suspect that would be incredible.
