I found this to be an interesting read..

With the recent events surrounding the missing Malaysian flight it raises the question, is it possible to hide from the government? If we assume for a second that the jet liner did indeed crash into the ocean then the ability to find it is quite remarkable. Comparatively speaking, a jetliner compared to an ocean is like trying to find a needle in a haystack the size of Texas.
For a person who values their privacy, it is nearly impossible for you to disappear completely off the government radar if you choose to partake in nearly any modern convenience. You every move is tracked, cell calls, financial transactions, public and private CCTV cameras, NSA tracking of emails and web activity, and the list goes on, and on, and on. Your only choice is to bug off to the hills and live off the land, or is it?
Let’s assume for a second that we experienced the unthinkable, an authoritarian regime wrenched power away from “We the People”. They were no longer happy to “monitor” your everyday life; they now began to control it. They tell you what you can and can’t say, say the wrong thing and they throw you in jail. They start limiting the types of firearms one can own. They try to disallow folks from growing their own food in the name of “public safety”. They control your health care, tell you what you what doctors you can visit, what health plans you must buy. Wait..all of this is already happening.
Let’s take it to a next logical step, they want to control population and you living on your little farm or in the woods does not fit their plans. They want you to live in a city where you can be controlled. They won’t notice you out in the deep woods, will they?
Consider this; the Governments of the world have been using spy satellites for 50 years. The satellites have been used to ascertain the capabilities of adversaries’ military capabilities and industrial production. Satellites of the first generation had a resolution of about 2 Meters, or enough to discern things like missiles, vehicles, or buildings. While highly classified, it is thought that current satellites can have a resolution of 6 inches or better. Due to atmospherics it might be impossible to resolve objects greater than this, but I think technology might be able to overcome these issues. For instance, putting multiple telescopes on the same satellite and averaging the results might further resolution.
So what does this mean to a person wanting to disappear from a prying government? Well, it means it would be darn hard. Not only are today’s spy satellites very sophisticated, but so are the methods to find information in the data returned by the satellites.
Let’s assume that you were trying to mind your own business in this scenario and had a little plot of land in the middle of nowhere. You own a few vehicles, farm a bit, and are just plain trying to be self-sufficient on your own terms. What are some of the considerations and precautions you might need against the prying eyes of the spy satellites?
They don’t hover over you. The travel in low earth orbit, so they are only directly overhead for a few moments.
As far as we know they use optical technology so they need sunlight to be effective. This means they are generally in a sun synchronous orbit. Furthermore, they fare better when the sun is at lower angles because targets will cast shadows.
The computers that sort through all of the data look for changes. It is easy to spot a vehicle that is moved when comparing two pictures from different times. Consistency would be the key to fooling the algorithms, parking vehicles in the same spot, for instance.
For decades, military’s of the world would track satellites. To keep top secret items, like say a new fighter jet, from prying eyes they would only bring them out at night in windows between satellite overflights.
Using optical camouflage appears to be at least somewhat effective.
Knowing where they are and when they will pass over.
The good news is that civilians do know where and how many of these satellites exist (we think). It is rather tough to launch a rocket without someone noticing. You too can track these little spy’s. There is a website called www.n2yo.com that tracks all satellites. Furthermore, they have a military category that can be accessed here.
