I think u do need the phone to interface with the device. It appears to be a wireless router of some kind. Still could be useful in grid down situation to keep in contact with yr people seripticiously and unnoticed.

Yes you need an ios or Android device with Bluetooth to configure and run the chat client app. But no internet data or phone signal required after that point.

How does it get that sort of range? It must rely on a repeater tower for that distance. Pretty good device though even if only for short range.

My son recently received some of these. He’s hoping to get to our retreat soon, where’s there’s no mobile access, to test them out.

In the 1960's we were communicating by bouncing signals from the moon back to earth from dapto NSW, using about 10 watts at 10 Ghz, tech has progressed a lot further in the last 50 years and at the frequencies these devices (and WIFI, Bluetooth etc) use, the signal travels in pretty well a straight line. Theoretically, 200 km + is possible with low powers, perhaps directional aerials and accurate pointing.
Fear not: he is watching everything... closely.

Three meshtastic devices received, my son 3d printed cases for them and made a node with a little Solar panel from Bunnings and his 3d printer. Batteries were salvaged from one of his Milwaukee batteries that wouldn’t hold a charge. A prepper mate waiting on his devices to arrive in the mail. These will be tested at my retreat in June.

On farm comms will be vital, we have enough UHF's for all of us plus a few spares for 'guests'.
It will be vital for everyone to know where others are and be able to call for help in a situation.
Friends may come and friends may go but enemies accumulate.

I’m told these devices send their location every few seconds, so you know where your people are even if they don’t respond to your call. Son is 3d printing a holder so they can be mounted on a chest rig, unlikely to get damaged or fall out. Apparently you can set waypoints, so you know where they are, they know where they are, and they can get to wherever they need to go without getting lost. Something a UHF radio can’t do.

Perfect, telling the Chinese exactly where you are.

Our own government is a bigger threat to our freedom than the Chinese will ever be, so unless they are sharing information with our government I don’t really care what the CCP know about me.
