Who here has a pet?
Who here has there pet included in there preps?
I only ask as today i had to take my 2yo Staffy, Beau, to the Vet.
He gingerly strolled in this afternoon, whimpering and lethargic and just flopped on the floor. Panicked, i rushed him to the vet.
Seems he had either had a nasty allergic reaction to something, or was bitten by something. An hour in observation, a course of antibiotics and $400 later we arrived home. I now have to keep my eye on him the next 24-48 hours. The course of meds lasts two weeks.
What if S had HTF...then what? Something as simple as a reaction to something an my best mate could be gone..
I dont know what the answer is, but after today its on my "to do" list..

You would prob need to find a vet during SHTF as we just wouldn't know!

I heard that Fish and pet antibiotics are the same as human antibiotics. Since pharmaceuticals are are specialised manufacturing process. They are made by the same manufacturer only the label changes.
500mg Amoxycillin is still 500mg Amoxycillin pet or human. Ive checked the labels on both my stocks of Antibiotics. All the same.

The Cat. She has enough food for 3-8 weeks at any time, we have mouse traps that might help supplement that and of course 'whole' animals can feed cats, so you would add in meat, organs etc. After the food is gone, humans become the priority I'm afraid to say for the cat and if it gets really bad, I'd end her humanely.

I have a 20kg bag dry food always on hand. Also leftovers if any. Dogs are pets now and will be tools after an event(although I expect some resistance from family with these ideas. Our parrot is also an early warning device and we feed him fruit and honey (also have a 2kg bag of 'honey-eater' mix on hand along with the dog food. And....a cat - useless bl_ _dy creature really - although I am told they taste like chicken.......

Unfortunately our cat is a houdini and just will. not. wear. a. collar! Luckily she's micro-chipped. At the moment we have 4 x 5kg bags of food for her (spare) which should last for ages. We usually only have one spare, and one bag being used but we picked these up for half price.
I've been meaning to get a kitty "go bag" for her, I'm thinking of putting 2 bowls, a bottle of water, a few days to a week worth of food, her harness, leash, collar and a copy of her records (council rego & vacc) in her travel carrier.
Can anyone think of anything else I should add?

I brought my Katana up on human foods and dry dog food, so if and when she runs out of dry food it won't really matter to her. In fact Katana prefers what we eat to her dry food that sometimes she just goes off her dry food. We've at 1 point had the same bags of dry dog food for 2 mths before Katana started to eat them again, we just ended up making a bit extra when we cooked food for us. And Gilbert is easy to feed, all I need to do is find him a bug or 2 or even a skink and he's feed till the next day or so.

I have an epileptic cat. No joke.
Bugging in, we have a couple months of medicine on hand and a couple weeks worth of food that we rotate through. The meds make her sleepy if she has too much, if we had to bug out in the car I'd give her a double dose and put her in the cat cage.
Bugging out on foot, we'd put her down.
Chances of us bugging out on foot are slim to none. I'd rather bug in for a bad situation than bug out on foot into the unknown.

We have 3 dogs at present, We have been Registered Purbred Dog Breeders for over 15 years and always keep these items on hand incase of a emergency, they have saved us thousands of $ over the years. Antibiotics/Medications from Vets can cost you an Arm & "2" Legs, but if you can get these from your GP or Friends you will save yourself a small fortune ! 1. Antibiotics,...we keep all unused Antibiotics for our dogs and ask friends & family for any they might have also. The main "general purpose " ones we use is "Cephalexin or Amoxcillin", as we breed a "Bull Breed" which are known for their occasional liking for a bit of a Scrap....then these Tab's come in handy if they have any puncture wounds. As Res-Q stated, yes they are exactly the same for Pets & Humans, infact the 2 below are also. 2'nd on the list of must-haves is "Mobic" which is an Anti Inflammatory and Pain Killer. For our requirements the Antibiotics and Mobic usually go hand in hand . The next can't do without Medication for our dogs is Antihistamines, we use Phenergan 25mg Tabs but as these are a non prescription item we have used Zyrtec etc also , any Antihistamine will do. We used to have a Staffy that when bitten by a Bull-Ant or stung by a Bee his head would swell-up like the Elephant Man, he would also have difficulty in breathing. Those Antihistamines saved his life many times, we used to take a sheet of them every where with us. Also great for allergies in summer, but MUST NOT be used for long term. We also use "Recharge", especially through the hot Summer months. If SHTF and you own pets and you can not access a Vet then those items are some of the must haves that i would want a stock pile of. We also have a K9 Surgical Kit (Pic Attached) but if you would like to look at that sorta thing a bit more indepth your best option would be to visit the K9 Hunting forums, Pig Hunting etc. Our kit includes a suture kit and a skin stapple gun. I think we are more Prepped for our dogs than for ourselves...lol Hope this has helped some.

Thanks for the info tanzb.
We have two Jack Russells at the moment and always have plenty of food on hand for them, although the little buggers will pretty much eat anything (we avoid cooked bones and chocolate though). Need to look at medical supplies for them though, especially staples/suture kit

Got a horse (for daughter). It could potentially be very hard to maintain it in a SHTF scenario. They drink huge amounts of water daily and generally constantly eat. It could potentially help move supplies or people over distances and could be a food source in a desperate situation (Don't tell the daughter that!!!) LOL!

I have two Staffies, both still young (2 and 10 months) but both solid little nuggets, very intimidating, very fast and very strong. They love being off there lead, still learning though..Listen MOST the time but are distracted easy. Just need some more time spent with them.

That's awesome. get them out as much as possible. my dogs only ever saw the leash when they didn't listen, they haven't been on for about 8 months. I let them know i need them and they have a job. be it protection to food. my will cross a river sever an animals back swim it back alive for me to finish. ill take hind keg off for myself and skin. cook rest for dogs. Theyl play with skin like a trophy for days. They do that coz i don't like it when they maul my potential food. if I'm cold they curl up each side of me. instant warmth. they only year and half old but we have strong bond. i only go to work without them.
