I am writing this in response to the food rationing post made by Rem here: ausprep.com/thread/768/venezuela-food-rationing?page=1&scrollTo=7007
I have been noticing things lately with my FlyBuys card. It used to be a simple program, just points for rewards.
The first change that surprised me, was the willingness to give ANYONE in your family a linked card to the same account, to share points and earn them together. I thought ok, this is neat, and signed up both my parents so we could save up points for something to share.
Then I had to go online, and register. It made me pick out my 10 essential weekly items. That made me uneasy, so I just picked a few essentials, and made up the rest.
Then I started getting emails, encouraging me to click and activate certain offers. Like, "Buy $5.00 worth of fresh meat, and receive 100 points!". I played along and clicked activate on offers that were relevant to me.
The emails then started to offer me $10, $20 or $30 off if I spend over certain amounts (I think it was $10 voucher with $80 spend). When I checked my works email, I had a look at the boss' FlyBuys email (it gets sent to the same address), and they were offered a $10 voucher for spending $50. The boss rarely shops at Coles so rarely uses FlyBuys.
The last month has me seriously considering not using it at all. Each week I've been getting a rather too-personalised emails...showing MY weekly purchasses. I see things that I've just purchased for the first time, or regular items. It's creepy. I'm not paranoid, but I do think our entire grocery shops are being tracked and watched via these cards.
I have decided to continue using the card for 'sheeple shops' - when I get what seem to be normal groceries (this could be OPSEC to appear 'normal'). For food storage, I will now be using cash as is often suggested.
I don't think we can be too careful when it comes to buying and protecting our preps. All that hard work, money, and preparing is simply too precious and important to have it unfairy taken away, should the government/whoever check our buying records, and see we have 200kg rice, 1000 cans of baked beans, etc.
