Is it possible to grow fruit trees from a seed??
ie - I eat a yummy juicy peach, can I grow a tree from this seed??
or do I have to only use cuttings??

Planting a seed will take up to 5 years to produce fruit but a graft will only take a couple of years to produce!

Planting a seed will take up to 5 years to produce fruit but a graft will only take a couple of years to produce! So, if I have a seed, say Apricot, do I just plant it, or do I need to do more?? Sorry, just really ignorant when it comes to fruit trees!! I have an Apricot seed that I have had in my veggie seed box for years, and have always wondered if it is worth planting it ( as opposed to just trying to plant it ).

Plant it in a small pot first and if it sprouts and starts to grow into sapling then you could try planting it somewhere in the garden. Not all seeds will grow though it just depends on conditions I guess!

Do I need to soak the seed first, or crack it even??

No need to crack it, just plant and water it. Haha

Emptied out the pot - no growth on the Apricot seed - will give it a few more weeks.

I planted one and it eventually sprouted. I sold the farm before I saw a blossom. About five years. Plus the fruit from the tree can be in a wide range of quality. Where as a grafted tree is identical to the source material. You could use the new tree and graft onto it a piece from a good tree from grandma's. But then I have never succeeded in grafting yet. Always die off. Good luck

generally if you want 1 tree and your doing it from seeds, it's a good rule to do say 5 or so seeds in 5 pots. Not sure on multiple seeds in the same pot like you do with other plants as I have never done trees from seeds before.

I too am a big fan of google but when people google "growing trees from seeds" I want this thread to pop up, someone to click it and get what they want. Then decide to explore the rest of the site.

Well, nothing came of my seed growing attempt. I think I'll stick to growing veggies!
