We are very lucky here in Australia, because we have the ideal plant for using to make fire either with the hand drill method, or the Fire-Bow method. This plant is the Goonagurra plant, also known as Grass Tree, Kangaroo Tail & Black Boy. There are species of this plant growing in every state of Australia. The inner core of the flower stem can also be used as tinder. The base of the leaves are edible, & the flowers soaked in water make a refreshing drink. Please take note that I use one extra step in this fire lighting process that has to my knowledge not been used or shown before, that is the use of extra tinder to transfer the ember to the kindling bundle. When I first learnt how to use the fire-bow, & before I started teaching others, I went into the bush on a day it was pouring with rain to make fire with this method. I took no tools with me what so ever. I fashioned a tool from a piece of rock, & with that I was able to make all the fire-bow parts. I also corded the bow string from the inner bark of the Stringybark Tree. And yes I did make fire in the rain, you may of heard my shout, Yesssssss! I hope you enjoy the video. Keith. These images are taken from my primitive fire lighting book. This is the Grass Tree plant & flower stem.
The Fire-Board, made from the same Grass Tree flower stem.
Left is the bearing end of the drill bit. Right is the fire-Board end of the same drill bit.
This is the bearing that I made that day with the stone tool.
