Years ago whilst living in the tropics (Port Douglas) we had to boil every drop of town water as it was full of Giuardia.... had a bad case of the runs when I forgot to use boiled water to brush my teeth..... had to take antibiotics for ages to get rid of the gut infection, not very pleasant

Good to see you showing your kids firearm safety my dad had a double barrel shot gun.... I never had the guts to shoot it but he showed us how to handle it if we needed to use it.... Was always kept on top of the wardrobe with the cartidges in a box next to it for safety .... never loaded (just in case)

It think when going off the grid - girls especially need to find one think that makes them feel human. For me it is having a glass of bubbles in a bubble bath occasionally, for a friend of mine it is an hour in the afternoon to read a good book and a have a nice cuppa in her flower garden, being on or off the grid either way you always need to take some time to do something that makes you feel happy and good about yourself

I have a dwarf coffee (2) growing in pots Never heard of them before - do tell!!!!! They are a variety of Arabica Coffea called Cataui. Small bush that you can grow in a pot.... very voracious feeders though. Have had my plants for 2 years and they finally flowered this year, but sadly no beans as yet. When I get my final homstead I will plant them out but hopefully next year they will start producing, takes many coffee beans and a whole lot of work for a cup of coffee but will hopefully be worth it. This variety of coffee bean has very few pests thankfully.

As a kid grew up on a farm where mum had to make everything stretch as money was hard to find and dad either grew or raised most of what we ate. I remember Ash Wednesday as it was the very first time I ever had to pack a bag "just in case", we packed up our dogs and cats when the fire was just over the hill, lucky the wind changed and everything was ok for us (except we had to round up the farm animals we had set free before dad got off the fire truck). Throughout my school days the first day of spring was fire drill day until the middle of autumn, we had school monitors that we would be allocated to, to help get the bushfire supplies to the town oval, we were very proud of the fact we could do it under 15 minutes. In 1998 I drove from SA to FNQ and had to really ramp up my being a "good girl guide" as I landed in Port Douglas at the start of cyclone season and found out that it wasn't to different from being prepared for a bushfire. The very first major cyclone (in the middle of a cyclone party) the resort that I was working at ran out of fuel for the generator and we blew up that generator and I had to deal with some very unhappy customers as we were in the middle of a heat wave, no power, no ice, not much food, no swimming pool filters, no fans and no lights for about a week (no happy customers). Fast forward to now, have survived many cyclones/bushfires/power outages and most recently the Australia day floods with no power for 4 days because I understand that mother nature is unpredictable and I hate running out of vodka and toilet paper (in that order).

Most farmers are really particular about the water on or around their land ( farmers daughter/granddaughter) as they know their farm will not survive without it and know how hard it is to get if there is a drought
