don't get too disheartened, it's a grate idea to float from time to time with lots of input we can iron out issues and if budgets allow it will be a grate trip, a week maybe a bit much for us, but anything can be organised, and if done between this page and it's sister page (or brother idk) it will be a grate little trip

lol I see your point, but logistic wise, we are very spread out, so it would have to be a mini holiday to entice a lot of members (to consider it anyways) there is a planned prepper get together in the USA happening middle of the year, (if only I had the cash lol) but what it is, a camping trip, at a nice site.. that's more about networking than sharing knowledge, but a lot of knowledge will be shared by its nature, and with the group environment, any practical questions can be asked, explained and practiced (and I cant teach soldering and electronic type work at all, unless asked the question, I'm a useless teacher) i see what you would like to do, have a prepper type skills event like they do in the states, numbers and location is always going to be a problem for us

love the idea some major issues, are our current locations, budget restrictions, a appropriate site to hold the get together and such
most of the topics covered we share our knowledge openly on this forum, the skills teachable is a different matter
if we can organize something (that tickles interest) a week long camping trip, to a well known location.. (bot bol related) just somewhere nice, that's got a decent rifle club near by (for firearms training/a bit of fun) and maybe a meeting hall so we can socialize more openly about prepping...
to doing classes I'm not really up for that, but sharing practical tips... maybe well received..
(may even be a group inch bag test run idea.. as a lot of questions has been asked of late on bobs, inch and such)

10 is a cop out... it don't take much space at all to store a few weeks worth of extra food....
9 ok... so you don't like beans and spam... well neither do I, what do you like?? soup?? veggies?? well this is a nice rice dish!!
8 it dose cost a lot of cash.... or dose it?? what pricing have you sourced??? what have you looked at??? firearms... yes expensive... but outside guns I can purchase equipment (high quality) for no more than $120... a item (I have a $200 knife on my wish list).. that's expensive stuff, but what do you own now?? oh you own a leatherman.... a first aid kit?? there is not that much extra gear a prepper really has compared to a average person... food wise, shop weekly, omg less fuel expense to shopping daily, well buy a pack of water when it looks cheap, or some extra canned food.... and how much did you spend on beer last week???
7. how do they find out?? opsec my friend opsec
6. your starving organics aren't going to make a difference, oh your one of those... and your worried about number 7.... (think freak)
5. refer to 6,
4. well remember the Brisbane floods, they said the same thing.... do you enjoy waiting in a line for a day to get a cup of rice and a bottle of water?? will you be pissed off??
3. good luck with that...
2. really?? look at the disasters in 3rd world countries, no sleep, no food, no meds, no water, gather in mass, yep they don't look like zombies
1. even the government requests you have 3 days worth of supplies, (pick a disaster agency any western one...) you think it's a number pulled out of their arse?? it's what they believe is a acceptable time to get relief sorted...
extra argument, cyclone threat at Townsville, no supplies on the shelves, mad rush from locals to get what's left, the corner store has a 200% mark up on already high prices for suckers like you

any preparation work needed?? any little hints from.personal mistakes?? as dehydrating frozen veggies (cheap as and when on special very cheap) sounds like a really good way to store bulk food..
dose it have to be the elchepo veggies or can I use the "more expensive" ones (lets face it sometimes for a little extra coin you can get the "good stuff" and mixing in some good stuff will boost morale, think a social Sunday dinner or a birthday...)
just throwing the ideas out there, diy dehydrated veggies really appeal to me as a low cost stores booster.... (and budget wise, 6 months worth of stores in current process will triple with this process)

well since this is starting to drift off topic
first big protest change will be a rise in GST from 10% on most goods to 15% on all goods
minimal wage will rise to "soften" the deal
income tax will stay the same (to soften the deal) but you will pay more tax due to wage rise
the next hit, Medicare will become income restricted, to a yearly amount available per yea per person, (will be made complex as f..k)
then centerlink, the dole will stay the same, the pension systems (disability, old age, etc) will be hit hard and turn.to the dole
then government spending, expect cuts to all "non essential services" and border strengthened to "keep focus of how we are being reamed"
unemployment is hard to really track, working more than 8 hours a week and your employed, nearly a million Australians are reported to be unemployed.... got to say something...
when centerlink closes for good, there will be a huge increase in unemployment numbers, and as such crime will sky rocket... if you don't have a gun, by the end of 2015 make sure you own at least one, as once it all collapses, it will be a country wide shtf event.... and it will make the depression look like child's play

take it, sort it, find out what looks tampered with and then give what remains to a neighbor with a warning
yea tin foil hat stuff but "the scariest words in the English language are we are from the government and we're here to help"

nea doc, this one is just cutting off big business from your tax money
the budget release is the very scary one, but on one hand Australia is in massive debt, on the other our government wants to pull us out of debt... who will loose??? remember rudds $800 little pay out, now we're paying it back with lone shark interest...

ABOUT TIME we have been funding billion dollar corporations to "stay in Australia"
can you apply for a million dollar hand out if your business is struggling... even cash given to farmers has to be paid back...
so why should I fund Holden, ford, spc, or any other "struggling" big business... should the government start handing money to banks because of a "lower than expected profit gain"....
it's probably the only good thing this government dose

suggestion of fruit, try dryer fruits in the baking section, you can rehydrate but I haven't found a successful method yet

its a good article, but it's missing suggestions on the lock box, what size, type, etc
it's almost as good to put certified copies of all suggested documents (jp) into a sealed pvc pipe and bury it in the back yard... at least you don't need to worry about fire rating and such on the safes

my 2 cents
good post,
I will go through how I plan security with questions I ask myself
first and foremost, what dose the neighbourhood look like?? new and expensive, old and run down, middle class family?
what cars are on the side of the road/driveways, are they less than 10 years old with a price tags of more than 20k or they are majority older cars or work utes, case the area out
what's on display, this is important, what do you see from the driveway??
then look at internal security features
fence, (I love colorbond it's expensive but looks clean) condition of fence, can you put weight on it?? dose it look strong?? how is it built (wood) are the supporting part of the structure on your side, or there side
now move to the house, outside... windows have bars?? or security screens, how good is the entry door?? how would you access the house from road side (think out the box)
now back of house, same again
now inside, what view points do you have?? where are your blind spots??
now FIRE, is the house fire resistant?? what extinguishers do you need??
now escape, how do you escape a siege you cant win
now I would look more into options, broken glass glued to the grip points of a fence for example (end of the world security)
early warning systems for blind spots
good lookouts
numbers, you plan to do it alone or plan on using others
highway, a secondary concern, can you see it?? if you can, light discipline...
there is more, any area anyone wants to expand on, make a new topic as each is a sub group than can be discussed

depends on the fridge?? 12v fridges are easy to power tho, they come with a mass of important info, a data card with relevant numbers based on those numbers most camping stores will have info on what amount of power you need to generate, and what you need to store for overnight my advice, the 12v fridge is very expensive, go with trusted names (like wacol) or you will be getting junk that will drop the temp 10 degrees below ambient (so it's a 30 degree day, fridge will run at 20 degrees) with the actual stats of the fridge we can be more helpful (2 fully charged truck batteries will last 2-3 days on a med/small sizes wacol fridge)

well it's definitely a emp scenario....
because I'm in a unit complex, already I'm in a bad spot, grab my bug in gear, a set of batteries, and see what electrical devices survived it
remove the battery from my car and the cabin light, see if bat is holding charge, hopefully the unit manager is home, give him a heads up
meanwhile, attempt to store any running water if possible (maybe enough pressure in lines to do so)
after a quick chat with the complex manager try and get a "instant community" going
ok next steep, I have extra clean water, I know I have some stockpiled food, store the cold stuff in eskies with ice... so that's extra food
organise a complex meeting with everyone still here (a lot I would bet bug out to family or stuck at work)
sort out next steep, hopefully (I mean HOPEFULLY) we can come to a common agreement
organise foot security patrols in the complex, and design a early warning system
so, recap, I have food, water, security, shelter, I should be ok for the first fee days...
oh I have some electronics in a make shift faraday cage (spelling out) so I should be able to search for conventional radio information, no guarantees, but it's a task....
after stressing over all of that, relax with a cold drink and start planning phase 2

i live less than 5 mins walking distance from my kids school (the downside, the school has a chance of being a evac centre)
I don't want to overload my kids with prep items in primary school, but in high school, more thought will be given, what to pack a high school kid as a edc/get home bag....
