Nah I have already tried that route, he agrees they're cool but wants resale value :/ And doesn't believe there is demand for a container home :/ You need to sell him the lifestyle, not the container.

That's just it, he agrees with that side. He just doesn't believe he will want to live in one place for the rest of his life. I however, do

Guys, you're makin' me blush Yes it's turning out ok, and keeps me off the street. Good point about resale value if you care about such things, I don't worry so much but you don't want to sink too much into something. That said I'm the world's worst at over capitalising because "I'll live in this forever". Wothahellizat Mk1 cost maybe $150,000 in materials, 6 years later I pulled it apart to rebuild, probably lost half. Wothahellizat Mk2 cost about $100,000 in materials, I'm thinking of selling it but doubt I'll get that back. The container house is not to plan so I doubt we'll get that back either, but at least if you DIY it doesn't cost too much. On our land there is an obvious house site, a place where normal people would build their house. We're not normal and have located the containers about 80m away. So we have not precluded a future purchaser from building a house in that regard. When/if we sell up my plan is to market what we are doing as a granny flat, artists retreat/studio, man cave etc to such people. Also it's somewhere they can live while building. Of course they may have similar ideas to us, if so all the better. Bottom line is though that I doubt I'll get the money back, but it may make the property much easier to sell. Not that we plan to sell it any time soon, my next move is into a nursing home As I said it's not built to plan so funnily enough the most likely SHTF event for us is the council telling us to remove the lot. If that happens there'll be some cheap blacksmithing gear for sale as we will have to go back on the road, probably in the yet-to-be-built camper on the Landcruiser (if the truck has been sold by then). That would be a real pain in some ways, OTOH we like living on the road so we would get by ok.

hahaha ... you love it I was wondering how you would get on with the council. Just add some wheels ... no it's a mobile and not a permanent structure ... hahaha ;-)

council isn't really an issue pending on how you are building them, as for resale, I have had customers sell them for about 20k higher than I sold to them. Brisbane just had one sell for around 1.2 million so there is resale value in them that is for sure.

as for external look, they don't have to look like a container: This one currently looks like a stack of containers however once it is done it will look like a multi million dollar warehouse and plaza This is a small one we have done however you get the point with external cladding: If you want to know how to build one (nope, I'm not here pusing some of my products) PM me and I will let you know. It isn't hard to build a container home and to me they look better and are easier to sell than a conventional home. Ok so mine are a little different to greynomad's as mine are built from new in a factory however I can still give you some advice. What greynomad is doing is pretty dam cool and I think it would be more satisfying building a container home from scratch with second hand containers like he is as you have a sense of achievement and can change the design as you go. For those that know me I don't try and sell my products, if you want some advice PM me and I will see if I can help you with some information about building your own without trying to sell you something lol. I am very passionate about container homes and using them for different projects.

Hey wolfstar, jump on ebay and have a look at prices of used containers, remote offices, and also renovated containers/granny flats. It might help give you an idea of resell value.

Oh I've looked at them before for storage before, imho they're pretty affordable for what you're getting so long as they're not damaged or rusted out. Even some of the container companies have not too bad prices delivered from Sydney. I think a relative recently got a 20 footer delivered for like 5-7k. I'll have to check how much it was now, lol. Mind you the delivery would have been at least a quarter of that (he lives not far from where we do, major downside to rural living, delivery lol)

Some great designs there Brad.
Yeah DIY is different to doing it professionally, I'm not being particularly cost effective or fast (story of my life) and as you say you can change things as you go.
I'm a great fan of container houses (pretty obvious I guess), we have three 20-footers and will probably buy a fourth one, but the house only uses two of them plus the covered area between them.
Wolfstar, a 20-foot "new build" or "one use" container (ie almost brand new) is $4k in Bundaberg. Dunno about 40-foot but there's not a huge difference IIRC.

Pity it takes longer that 12 minutes in real life Is there a house on the land you are looking at? No mate, we are looking at bush blocks. Blank canvas! I am getting a 9kva Able diesel genset, then with my workshop up I can get the solar setup! I will buy something with water but I want 2x36000lt tanks and 2x23000 tanks as backup! I have a 5000lt that is going on a hill or a 25-30ft stand to have pressure without pumps! I am going next week to look at land around Tenterfield area!

Wow, and I thought we had a lot of water storage (1x 24000 and 1x 35000) If you have the height a header tank is a good way to go, gives you a few days/weeks to get the pump fixed if it breaks. We use a pressure pump but I think I'll duplicate it so we have a backup.
