Wow, and I thought we had a lot of water storage (1x 24000 and 1x 35000) If you have the height a header tank is a good way to go, gives you a few days/weeks to get the pump fixed if it breaks. We use a pressure pump but I think I'll duplicate it so we have a backup. At the moment we have 2x23000 + our own 5000lt and 2pumps...So I decided to go with a header tank to eliminate the pumps!! She whom I love likes to wash stuff regularly and if that makes her happy then more tanks...LOL When they change and fixed the lines we had no water 1day a month for 18months!!!!! My little 2kva fixed that problem but...No more...they can shove there power and reliance on all that shit, right up there @#$%ing Arse...excuse my french...

Reckon, best to be independent of it all if possible...and I know it's been a while since my school days but I'm sure that's not French.

I had to look that up Not quite there but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I'm fairly sure it's not a train.

Here is a link I found with some great ideas of what you can do with a shipping container, much of it is "for sale containers" but look at the posts between the sales ads... usedshippingcontainer.tumblr.com/

Nah I have already tried that route, he agrees they're cool but wants resale value :/ And doesn't believe there is demand for a container home :/ Land and housing are only going up so I,m pretty sure ther,ll always be a demand for affordable housing.Failing that there's always the Omg crew who have more money than sense and think its quirky. They do make secure foundations and no white ants attacking.Maybe that's a viable angle to sway hubby?

This guy has now put together an e-book on how he fitted out a container. This maybe helpful because it is Australian.

The potentially smooth sides [some have minor corrugations] of a refrigerated container [go hi top] look better to the eyes, already have great insulation and cost only a little bit more than standard ones. The downside is they're aluminium and stainless so a bit different to weld.

That looks great, graynomad. As I'm not familiar with your region, is bushfire a concern?

I would say that bushfires are not a big thing around here. We had a big burn off 2 months ago and we've cleared most the understory for a few acres around the place. That leaves canopy fires and I'm told by the fire guys that they don't occur here, dunno why that would be as they occur elsewhere, but that's what they say.
We're prepared to live with that risk as I love having the trees around, but plan B is to get in the truck and bug out, we lived in that for 14 years so can do so again I suppose if we lose the "house".

The screened area is a no brainer really, simple to do. The only real issue I see with this design is the height, it will be hard to get that with containers. Of course they are just steel boxes, with appropriate engineering you can create just about any shape, but you have to pay engineers to figure it all out.
That said, one thing containers are good at is stacking, they are already engineered for that. So you could stack 2 and cut the floor out of the top one and the roof from the bottom one, maybe just half way along, that would give you a loft area similar to the above I think. The gap between them would be easy to infill.

Some nice designs, I wonder how many have actually been built.
