OK, so I finally got it all together. The 2 main attachments are in the picture above, the round one looks like it will end up like twiggy sticks and the flat one seems a bit fragile. I will be putting them on tomorrow as i filled the dehydrator with $5 a kilo mushrooms :-)

had my first batch of mince jerky today, used some of my cayenne spices (lots of cayenne and paprika with some other things), came out pretty good it has a different texture, more "crumbly" than normal but good nonetheless.
The jerky gun worked ok, the wide narrow attachment didnt work the best but the round one worked a treat. The flat one kept breaking apart.
All in all I am very happy and will be buying 5-10kg of mince this weekend (if i go into town) to start mass production :-)

I have also dried out 5 punnets of mushrooms we picked up for $1 each. I will be buying some frozen peas and corn tomorrow and trying to dry that out as well.

Hey guys,
So August is over and I am onto a new month. My food stores are looking great and I have about 10 weeks of food here including meat, and that is eating meat every day.
I havent gotten the water sorted yet but I am heading into Perth this weekend with the ute so will be picking up the blue 44 gallon drums while I am down there.
In regards to the jerky gun, i found the flat attachment useless but the round one worked fine. However!!... the gun was so flimsally made it fell apart after the first few kilos of mince. I am very dissapointed with this but I have found a fantastic alternative to using a jerky gun to make jerky with mince. I will be doing a DIY\walkthrough once I do the next batch early next week.
The round mince jerky tasted great but had a consistency similar to dry 'twiggy sticks'.
So far I am quite happy with the food stores and the water will be sorted out this week, I will be making a new post in a minute to detail this months 'plan'
Cheers Reth

OK, so September is here, the start of spring (yay), the end of AFL for the year (bigger yay!) and a new month of preps.
However I am having trouble deciding what route to take this month and am looking for ideas. I was thinking either communications, FAK or weapons. Monthly spend amount will be around the $500-$1,000 mark.
Thanks guys Reth

You can do a lot with $500-$1000.
In terms of comms, I recommend baofeng uv-5r uhf/vhf dual band radios. Can be had on eBay by the bucket load. Usually about $40 each. I picked up a 5 pack for $200 delivered. Be aware these are highly programmable and as such are more complicated to use than a standard 80 channel like a gme, bit also a fraction of the price. Also they use a 6 digit input, and to get some of the authorised 80 uhf channels you need 7 digit input. But this isn't a big issue for internal comms.

I accidentally hit post... I'm on my phone.
In terms of medical, stocking most commonly required otc medicine will come in at around $200 I'd guess. A good individual fak would be about $50 and for reference, my group camping/shooting/bug out medical bag cost me about $350 excluding the bag.
And what are you thinking about in terms of weapons?

Hey austemplar, I am pretty much thinking the same for everything you have listed so far. In regards to 'weapons' I am more considering the reloading aspect for my 12ga, stocking up on primers, powder and wads. Getting my 22 ammunition up to about the 3-5k mark and same for the air rifle. Buying new strings and decent arrows for the bow and making a few shanghais (cant buy them here, but can buy the rubbers, go figure) and stocking up on either ball bearings or marbles for shanghai ammo.

That's easy. Which is currently your biggest weakness?

Comms - I only have short range UHF walkies
FAK/Medical - Basic $30 FAK in house and cheapos in the cars
Weapons - 1.5kg powder, 2700 wads, 100 primers, 250 12ga shells, ~500 22lr
Putting it in that context, comms and medical seem to be the weakest, I will have to choose between them. hmmmm.... I have to think on this :-(

Who are you hoping to communicate with? Depending on the range you get with the two ways you've got, you might only need a hand crank am/fm to get emergency updates and call it covered for the moment.
If you've got another house or something 20km away that you need comms with then things get more interesting.
I see the priority as medical. And that's one I consider very important. Has everyone done a good first aid course? Sort out a good bug in kit, have it in one or two plastic containers so you can throw it in the car if needed. Put together a good trauma kit for each vehicle. And make up flat pack individual first aid kits for your edc/backpack/etc. If you want specifics for what I put in my kits just ask but I'll have to write it later after I finish work and I've got by laptop.

communication is mainly going to be between me and my home as I am an onsite IT tech, but also to communicate with my father in law who works one town over and his missus who lives a few k's away from us, however I see your point about the medical.
Me and the missus both have our first aid certs but thats it, I would definitely appreciate specifics on your FAKS and trauma kits. I have been looking through a few medical supply websites and there is so much to choose from that it tends to be a bit confusing.
I will have to look for courses or information on suturing wounds and IV's and more advanced medicine as well.

Make friends with a nurse or paramedic and get them to show you how to cannulate and suture. However legally unless you've got the piece of paper that says you're qualified you can't lawfully do these to anybody else, even with consent. Though I'd rather be charged with a crime that saved somebody's life than watch them die. You can do a short course, I believe it's called cert 4 in emergency medicine but it's currently out of my budget range. I'll detail my smaller kits and just post pics of my larger ones. The biggest one needs to have expired items replaced but I've overspent lately on other things

No that's different to the one I looked at. I think the price was about $2.5k but not as much content.
About to knock off work... I'll be sleeping until 13:00 then I'll take pics of a few of my kits to give you some idea.
Dr gaz also did a great post on faks

Looking forward to seeing your jerky walkthrough as this and dehydrating is something I really want to get into. Where are you guys getting your gear from for this?
My FAK is in pretty good nick and my wife's a nurse so I'm happy on that front, so comms is next on my list I think, and those Baofengs look the way to go.

You've made so much progress! My vote for priority goes to a FAK as well... if something goes wrong I'd prefer to be able to fix injuries than talk to someone.
I'm really keen to see how you go with the twiggy sticks as well, I'd love to make them but don't have any special equipment.
