Well your lucky, the shtf big time, life as we knew it is long gone... You have survived well to this point, but all your current plans and bols are now no longer safe, so you renember "plan z" and at this point its your best option... You make the dangerous trip, all the time chanting "what the hell am I thinking!!! But luck would have it, you make it to the remote island location, (still yet to be decided look into the thread plan Z) Even more good luck, the same time you make it, 2 other "ausprep" groups make it too, great news!! But now your on a blank island, where to start?? Well first and foremost, a camp site needs to be chosen, and water needs to be found and used, and the starting of food management (growing/hunting/fishing) What's next?? (This is real early stages, of setting up) Good luck

Skills would need to be identified and jobs allocated accordingly.

Well much is variable. On what we have when we get there, resources there, the others there... That's why we would need to identify who can do what as early as possible. Setting up camp, foraging/hunting and a guard rotation would be 3 of my main priorities regardless.

Well I would assume extremely limited resources outside a few boats and the odd Bob, so good point A major first steep is a full scout of the island?? To locate and id any points of "early warning" interest (for guard posts) with a limited number of starting people But all good points Wolfie

Thing is, if it's an island it's not hard to avoid attracting attention from the main land while the population is small. So early days security would be not a huge issue in all likelihood. So I'd set up a patrol, mostly on the mainland side of the island.

All the islands listed so far are beyond the horizon of the mainland (kinda a selling point, even the aboriginal people didn't use them (according to Google) so reduces further the chance of a main land force assaulting the island, (I would me more parcial to sea based patrols when numbers improve ..)
Combined with your land based but the main land patrols will be landing points, with outposts overlooking the landing points where a successful assult can take place...
Still a good pick up Wolfie, estlabish some kind of security so we don't get stuck with our pants down

Crops yes, permanent structures would be nice, but... Idk, (right away that is) as wanna stay environmental nut And need a good grasp of local weather patterns... But also (it gets hard) a storage basement and outpost fortifications would need to be addressed

Given a number of us have kids (and here's hoping we still do by this point), as part of the security plans, I'd be drilling them in what to do in the event of an emergency -ie where to hide, what to do if they see someone approaching the island etc
I'd also be looking at what help they can be around the camp - organise a 'buddy' system with older kids matched with younger kids etc. Lots of things that could help with that also occupies their time and ensures Mum and Dad are free to help out as well.

considering we would eb going there with nothing pretty much, permanent structures would likely entail cob style buildings. that would also assist in excavation for bunkers/basements

actually cob homes are something ive been interested in for a while, if shtf and i cant get containers, thats my next option, lol
im thinking a town block at least (which is what, 6x4 yards at the current typical size at the minimum, allowing people space and garden/workshop room
and, some may prefer the ancient european way of doing things, communal houses with two or more families, seperate dwelling areas, but communal kitchen/gathering areas aka atriums.

Still want kids to have some kind of childhood (even tho by now they would have seen things no child should see) But evac drills/emergency drills a really good idea (and a bit of fun) Buddy system is a good idea, for everyone including kids, and little jobs, as long as we try and give some form of education to them (as a high pirioty) then yep they would love to help out, I'm strongly against using children as combatants (just my opinion) but outside that, its a new "colony" so it will be there's

if we could get livestock like sheep, goats or chickens, they would be ideal jobs for kids (they could do them in groups, and wouldnt be an issue so long as they werent rowdy )

Oh for sure - definitely not in combat and I think part of the 'skill assessment' stage is working out who can help with education (ie any of us with training/teaching background). I'm thinking 'little house on the prarie" style of life - time for chores, time for school and time for fun

Will this be a safe location? Will the threat reach the island and if so, how do we get off the island.
This being established, and depending on travel time and time of day/night the first things should be to set up a temporary camp.
From the camp, there needs to be a team setup and a immediate and thorough search done of the island to ensure there is no immediate threat to the group.
A multiple crew, security watch will need to be held around the clock for the first night.
First daylight the island will need to be scouted for any possible resources and also a permanent site for camp.
From here i would establish a temporary chain of command to ensure all aspects are covered and overseen. Security, camp set up, scouting etc.
These are all short term actions. I dont think you can really put in any long term plans until camp etc has been established for a few days/weeks.

Space is limited on this style of living (unfortunately) so larger animals could be unsustainable But one of the military teams (at least) will be a hunting team (red meat) amongst others (providing numbers) but good points

Sorry been going on the longer term tangent, Lol Exactly, we need to determine the location is free from the issue that caused us to leave, it is a "too hard" basket bol (so gives us a fighting chance that it remains uninhabited by our 2 legged friends) But a good coastline scout would be a need when approaching a island (you see a group of boats moored then you know people are there, and they know your coming... Even if its us) But to remind everyone, this is more a complete social breakdown on a country/global scale type of event (rule of thumb, anything that can cause more than 50% of the population to be dead within 12 months) And this plan is your last hope (all other plans have failed/its to dangerous to continue)
