gray - those shots are good enough to be promotional shots for camping and 4wding in Australia, a lot of us 'want' to do this and that, and never seem to find the time/money/inclination, but you..... well, the photos say more than i ever could :-) Thanks, I was (still am I suppose) a photographer and did a lot of work for magazine over the years, so I guess that helps It's hard to get away like that if you are working, trouble is the standard 4 weeks is not really long enough unless you want to run around like a maniac. That particular trip took 3 months and that was way too fast, but we were with mates who only had that amount of time.

Thought I'd share mine. Not as rugged coz I'm bit of a comfort creature. VW Touareg 4xMotion. Equipped rather humbly with underbody protection. Only minor trips.. nothing too hardcore yet.

No good having the rite trailer with out the rite truck to pull it. Landcruiser 80 series turbo diesel, NO electronics or engine management and will run on dirty diesel due to extra filtration fitted. Uhf, Cell phone, HF and Sat phone on board Locked, lifted, dual batts and all the other norms we fit to out tourers. Twin tanks giving about 800 - 1000km range A descent first aid kit and the knowledge to use it.

I don't have a car but I'm making a wagon that can be towed by bike, I'll post some pics when I'm done.

Hi guys, just a thought, can everyone posting photos of their vehicles please cover their number plates. Just a bit of a personal safety issue. especially for those with really well kitted out vehicles, it becomes a theft magnet, the parts alone would be worth pinching them. keep safe, keep your personal info as hard to get as possible, especially as big brother is always watching.

People who know me would never try steal from me. Honestly nothing on my car is that expensive and definitely not worth the medical bills, no matter how comprehensive your health care insurance is...
People driving past me can see my plate, so it's not exactly worth hiding. Also my plate is cool so I want to show it off haha

They would need a flat top to get mine out, once they got passed the gates, the dogs and the alarm. But yes Krull68 we do need to be mindful of privacy.

Two staffies at the (locked) gate and a 12Ga at arms length. krull68, your point is very valid and taken on board. Thankyou.

Dam I only have my sharpia x but she'll dig her way out to you if she sees you as a threat, I so over having to fill in the holes because of the people down the road. Worse thing is my house mate has been yelling at her for it and today she snapped at him, as far as she's concerned he's become a threat and she wants him out, so now I've had to chain her up.

My logic may be skewed here but as we live in a rural situation and we are not connected to the grid I hope that you may give me credit for speaking my mind about the practical lifestyle we live.
In the late seventies or early eighties the NSW Ambulance Service did a field test in relation to the colour of their existing buff coloured vehicles and the new white ones they were changing over to.
It was found that on a warm to hot day the temperature inside the buff coloured vehicles was seven degrees warmer/hotter than the new white vehicles they were changing over to.
I would say the the temperature difference between a white vehicle and a black/dark colour would be even greater.
It is noticeable to me that when we go to the city just how many of the vehicles are either black or dark coloured and when we return to the rural areas how many white vehicles there are in comparison particularly those that are used by farmers and rural workers.
I also notice that those of you with wellside utes rather than tray tops must find that they are nowhere as practical.
If you look at 'graynomad's' vehicle on page one of this post you have a good idea of what I am talking about.
In a true SHTF situation I believe that tray tops would be far more practical than a wellside and that white fits into the scenery far better than a dark colour.
I am open to discussion on this.

Mrs Pete and I both have white vehicles, mostly because they're (IMHO) most visible on the road. Mind you, the number of times nutters have almost collided with a white Prado with the headlights on is unbelievable.

My city car is going to be written off in the new year from the hail damage from that brissy storm last month, I'll try to hang onto it until mid year when I'm in a better financial position to uupgradeit. But the good news is, the wife has approved me to buy a dual cab Ute, and is even asking me what models are available in different brands lol. I have never seen her with this much enthusiasm about buying a car that I want lol

This is mine. Its pretty stock standard except for the rims/tyres and flares. I have a few things I'd like to do to it if I ever get around to it and if I don't upgrade to a 4 door model first.

I agree that a tray is way more practical, mostly because you have access on 3 sides. I had slide-out cookers and fridges, access to dual batteries etc etc all easy by just dropping the side boards. On one side the side board was used as a table. Also the whole thing is dead square, that makes it easier to build stuff into it. One possible down side is that it's all higher because it's over the wheels, not between them. As to colour, both my current 4x4s are white and yes that makes them cooler and more visible. And it's this visibility that is a problem IMO. Of course it's good on the road, but when in the bush I can climb up on a hill, look in the direction of my camp, and the tiny Jimny sticks out like dog's nuts, the 12-tonne truck parked right next to it is hard to see. I'm about to fit out my Cruiser as a camping vehicle and I plan to paint it either mid grey or some form of beige or desert tan, even now we tend to "commando camp", I do not want my camp to be visible from the road or wherever. Post SHTF (should that ever happen) it will be more important. Yes the colour will make it hotter, but when you add a tropical roof (roof rack, solar panels, etc) a large part of that is mitigated, and you tend to camp under the trees anyway. It's different in town in day to day life parking in car parks etc. But that's not something I do that often and it will be even less frequent soon. Joey, why a dual cab? Do you have family that needs to be seated? If not it's a total waste of space. If you do then of course you need it. Morgo, have you seen those fantastic camper backs for them, almost enough to make me buy a Jeep

I've seen the roof top tents, I'll have to check out the camper backs. Sounds interesting.
