Some of my seedlings are coming up - that's a positive!!! Also planted some Black Russian Tomatoes in some large pots I have - going to stagger my summer plants this year - hope to avoid overload of one type of vegie, and string them along a bit longer!

Some of my older seeds failed to sprout; I've now bought some newer seeds of various types. The next step is to try dried legumes from the supermarket to see if they sprout; this will be cheaper than buying packets of sprouts from the garden section of department stores or the green building. I've currently got chickpeas sprouting in my garden (as an edible companion plant to help put nitrogen into the soil) which came from the supermarket. The 375g packet of McKenzies dried chickpeas cost me $2.40 and has hundreds of seeds in it.

And, after 8 days away, got to play in my garden today; planted some dwarf beans, and then some pumpkin ( Qld Blue ) seedlings, as well as a few Rockmelon seedlings. Prior to that, I had a few old holes dug, so mixed previous soil with Mushroom Compost & Chicken Manure. Hope the seedlings like that!

Yeah, I know you used to be able to buy them cooked, and you could munch on them, much like peanuts. I bit one, almost cracked all my teeth, then spat it out-rock hard. They were the dry ones-I think they will only be good for soaking and cooking soups.

Yes, soak and cook indeed. But don't limit them to use in soups.
Some of my favourite uses for chickpeas are:
- in a salad with chopped tomato, cucumber, red onion, parsley, coriander, salt & pepper. Especially good if - after they're cooked - you fry them at high heat to make them crunchy and toss them in middle-eastern spices. Or use this in a tortilla/taco. - hummus. This can be used as a dip, as a sauce, or - as someone I know does - eaten with a spoon. Too much for me, but whatever floats your boat. - chickpea curry - as a patty in a vegetarian burger or as a falafel.
Use them any way you'd use the canned type, but canned ones are often cooked to the point of being mushy.

I just planted the dried ones from the soup aisle in the shop ☺ obviously not the cooked or canned ones tho as they have been processed. They didn't take long to start growing and are doing well!

I'm envious of your garden, VegHead. I notice the owl - I once had one under a lean-to to keep pigeons away. It was the type that made a hooting sound when the motion detector was triggered. I looked at it one day to see a small flock of pigeons cuddling up to it, apparently comforted by its presence. A waste of $20 if ever there was one...

Planted some Zucchini seedlings, topped up some pots with Mushroom compost, then planted a heap of seeds into seedling trays - White Jackfruit, Lemongrass, Russian tomatoes, pumpkin & eggplant, Ukranian cucumber, and also scattered about 4 packets of basil throughout the garden.

A few tomatoes,Got a couple of hundred capsicum seeds sprouted and a dozen pumpkin seedlings limited to what I can grow in pots in this rental so probably give most of them away ( bit of potential networking).Getting a few fruit trees going in pots ready for when we buy property.

Veghead, your garden looks abundant! What an inspiration.
Yesterday we finally made a start on our veggie garden at the farm. I chose preparing compost as my very first task, using a couple of those bins with removable lids. I'll build a timber box system in due course but the bins are the first crack at it.
We have also planted some herbs in wine barrel tubs on the verandah.
Next jobs are finishing the chook house and making raised garden beds for veggies.

Thanks milspec. I forgot to take some pics of the orchard and the pumpkin / cornfield, the strawberry beds and the espaliered fruit trees and berry canes, the tropical garden and all the 'hidden' edibles though. Maybe in my next post.

They are garlic, and yes, they are all 'pre-sold'. My wife preserves the cloves in a special mix (makes them almost odourless) and they are then on-sold at a very good price or bartered for other services.

I moved my capsicums to a larger pot, got plans to use some more of my radish seeds and scatter them around. Also might retry tomato plants.
