Planted more chillis (hot & Extra HOT), some seedlings from the hot house (Ukranian cucumber - the most sweetest cucumber I have ever tried - anyone want some seeds???), thai basil, and more basil around the tomatoes - they say basil repels bugs when sown around tomatoes, so we will see.

Might have to try the basil trick in our vege garden if it works at keeping the bugs a bay!

Cleared out a patch of tomatoes that are no longer bearing fruit. Dumped a few bags of cow poo, compost and garden soil, then mixed it all in with the current soil I have.
Went through my winter seeds tin, started planning for the cooler months.
Planted a few rows of radish, turnip, swedes, and snow peas.
I need to add more soil/compost/poo to improve the soil quality that I currently have.

Busy day in the garden today - planted: peas, broad beans, red cabbage, green cabbage, silver beet, corriander, thyme & tarragon.
In the hot house planted some tomato & cucumber ( see if they will grow during the winter months ), as well as basil.
And, put out 2 fig trees that were off shoots from a tree I planted for my gran in '95 (I'll keep the one that takes the best).
Need to plant some passionfruit to hopefully cover over the whole back fence.

...they say basil repels bugs when sown around tomatoes, so we will see. Any word on this? All the literature says to plant strong fragrance plants. Apparently you need 3 Basil per Tomato plant. We have basil near our cherry tomato plants and so far so good. In the area where we had no basil, lost the lot. We are currently working on which plants give the best outcome. Will have updates next summer.

Same, same - plants with no basil nearby got hammered by the bugs - those around basil did well.

I had 20 tomatoes on the bush last week. Went away for the weekend, and have come back to some of the fruit having fallen off and all the leaves thickening and curling. Not sure exactly what the problem is, but will monitor for a few days and hope it gets back to normal. Have harvested some more salad greens from my pots, plus planted some pumpkins that are looking good after a few days rain. The two potatoes I planted have a lot of foliage come up, and from a quick look underneath (kids dug part of the garden up for fun) have plenty of tubers growing too.

I tried growing spuds in pots - started out great, lots of growth, then next thing covered/eaten by caterpillars, then started to re-shoot, then died. Oh well, maybe next time

Yeah, I grew in pots last year after seeing how easy it supposedly is on TV, however they were attacked by bugs and our pets, so only ended up getting two thumb size potatoes out of it. The two I have now planted are doing well, although I need to keep heaping the soil on as the torrential rain we've been having has washed part of them clean. I got home yesterday to find the wife has bought a dozen more pot plants; mainly shrubs but also a couple of herbs. Apparently she is visiting the nursery again next week, so will mention it would be nice to get some more edibles rather than just ornamentals.

The last of the basil has died off following the big rains and cooler temperatures (I probably used most of it making spaghetti sauces, but my wife filled me in when I went out looking for some on the weekend). The Rosemary is on the verge of being out of control - it may have a lot of uses, but it is also a weed. My wife just trussed up the tomato plants again as they are growing like crazy.

Broad beans... I let my garden have a rest over the winter, the broad beans are a nice way to get a yield from your fallow periods. I use a variety called 'coles dwarf' from www.greenharvest.com.au they do really well in my coastal conditions, just plant in mid autumn and I'm pulling a yield in spring.. they suppress weeds, give a good nitrogen yield.. and once harvested I just mow the rows down for a good spring mulch.

Fresh green broadbeans are amazing, my kids love going and getting them from the garden and eating them there, very sweet! We usually plant 1kg worth and get about 4-5kg back after shelling and kid tax
