My problem with the climate change issue is thus: The only solution put forward by the left is, tax, reduce freedoms, wind and solar. That's about it from them. None are prepared to look at anything that includes burning anything. CSRIO has done studies on algae production that can form both coal like substance and oil, using the algae, if the same amount of cubed footage was used as was used to drill and dig, we could theoretically use up all the co2 we put into the atmosphere plus about 5% of the natural co2. when I brought this up with a member of the green party, they got rather rude, abusive and called me anti science. Sadly I cannot work with someone who becomes dictatorial without even accepting to look at any alternatives that do not fit with a certain political outlook. Anyhow, if anyone can come up with practical scientific (practical engineering) solutions, without derogatory statements not based in fact, I am prepared to listen and look into it. If derogatory insults is all a person has, including disparaging someone's intelligence, then I am afraid I walk away questioning their sincerity. I remember as early as 2003 or so I think they were talking about algae, a specific strain that is, replacing crude oil as an energy source, we could grow petrol at home they said. Sounds allot like what you are saying.

Clownface, we have now established that you and I disagree on this issue. It happens sometimes. Fair enough.

In my completely un-scientific opinion, the climate is changing. Humans may be having an impact or may not.
I do think that boosting other energy sources are important to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and also because oil is so valuable and we keep burning it!
I like the idea of nuclear power however with the evolving terrorist threat and capacity for violence of mother nature as seen in Japan, I'm not sure it's what I want to be in my area.
I think biofuels aren't ideal either as without population control, the already struggling food output of the world will fall even shorter of the mark.

Geo thermal, hydro, wind turbine, solar. Plenty of energy flowing all around us that we can harvest.

Climate change is for real. It can be a monstrous problem. Here we can wake up to a clear frosty morning, get to 40 degrees by 4 pm am be cold by 8 pm. But then I do live in Melbourne.

I remember as early as 2003 or so I think they were talking about algae, a specific strain that is, replacing crude oil as an energy source, we could grow petrol at home they said. Sounds allot like what you are saying. Ok the spelling is not correct, but the phonetic spelling as I remember is Spuralina algae. I am sure one of our resident smarty pants will be able to give us the correct spelling for the little green bugger.
Having said that, I do not like the fight between the different sides, all it gets is arguments, with no outcomes besides name calling which is counter productive, such as, "your paid by big oil", or in America " paid shrill for the Kosh bros", oh and my fav "your just anti science" ( I personally love that one, means nothing but is a great way of saying, I have no argument, so I will insult you and finish the argument and feel good about myself that we are still no closer to any agreement).
I myself am all for anything we can do, and make it commercial successful that will do the following, stop drilling for oil and or gas, stop digging for coal, stop the need for subsidies for any and all energy producing systems and over all, reduce the costs of energy, transport, reduce or eliminate the damage to the enviorment (oil spills, chemical runoff onto reefs and the like, bird kills from blood huge turbine blades).
That is the direction I would like to see the conversation go. So heads together, stop name calling and lets find solutions, because most of the best ideas have not come from academia, but from normal people on the ground looking at what works and what does not. Was Thomas Eddison a scientist when he made the light bulb? don't think so, was retroactively given to him after his invention became famous. many other examples can be given, we just need to get back the inventor spirit.

Land mass vs population density is our problem. we have aprox 23 million in an area the size of the US who has nearly 300 million. So we have less than 1/10th the population per sq km and we are expecting to do the same for the same cost as bigger population centres, so do the math on how much it will cost per head. Heck, some European countries are about the size of Tasmania yet have the same or larger populations as we do. Simple economics really.
That's the problem with tackling climate change as well. whatever it would cost per head, would cost us 10 time or more per head here, due to our land mass.

How can you stop subsidies when capitalism is just a word? There's words and there's systems: words aren't systems! Entropy, aka the arrow of time, disintegrates even man made systems! Capitalism doesn't even make money... money is a system!!
