Baldivis is basically a swamp isn't it? Some of it - particularly around Rivergums (and especially near the new high school) was reclaimed swamp. The water table there is so high that even soakwells don't work effectively. Digging a hole requires dewatering to a ridiculous extent - especially given the small block sizes. We never had an issue with drainage being in central... our entire property was imported sand. Was crazy how quick that suburb actually grew... many 'fastest growing suburb' phrases were thrown around but seeing the corners that got cut was amazing. I saw houses in handover 8 weeks after slab poors and similar madness... Still have a few good friends there, is always interesting to hear how things are going.

I sold my Baldivis Central property in October 2013... boy did I get out at the right time. I still made good money on that house. You're right about the high level of FIFO in that suburb, was a nice quiet place to live because of that though. Half of the houses were empty most of the time and not just due to the FIFO. There was little demand for rental housing in the area and most were owner occupiers. Only people I knew that were renting, were also building a house there and were just waiting for it to finish. Soon as overtime started drying up though it was pretty clear to anyone paying attention the boom was over. I think I managed to get out before those that didn't have personal connections to the mining industry and were simply listening to the media saw the writing on the wall. It's the "anyone paying attention" bit that always gets me... so many people think they know what's happening, but they rely on gossip rather than serious thought & study. So many also got ripped off by bad advise from "alleged professionals". Yeah so true... I had really bad feelings for the WA economy for all of 2013 but seeing the financial situation of the company I worked for along with others from customers we had good relationships with at EOFY... I just knew at that point I had to go. Looking back, I really knew January of 2013 but didn't trust myself enough to act. I think I was trying to convince myself things would magically get better... I guess too many held onto that fantasy for too long? The whole thing as taught me to trust my instincts more and I hope I can actually act with more purpose next time.

Baldivis Central is different - it's a little higher than Rivergums...
And you're right about the corners that were cut; it was all about releasing maximum numbers of properties for maximum profit. While I get that from a business perspective, ethically I have issues with it.
And you should've seen some of the crappy work some builders did...

I can find you video if you want...

Okay some snaps...just off the net but most of my time on the ground during both events was Ops room stuff...the volume of sand that came through peoples house floors though was phenominal (Im talking houses half buried internally in slit and it just flows like water through the floor pad) and Christchurch has a less sandy soil composition than Perth (I dread to think of what would happen to all the houses built on canals!) ...and A LOT less brick houses (good luck with those too! The cracks may look minor but the building integrity is compromised...) www.bing.com/images/search?q=christchurch+earthquake+liquefaction&qpvt=christchurch+earthquake+liquefaction&FORM=IGRE

This is a good representative pic (albeit an aerial shot)...the grey is slit, that is a new suburb 2 years old and the slit is 1m+ deep!

Incidentally it didnt rise out of the river on the left edge of the pic...it rose up in fountains out of the ground...this particular suburb was probably ten times this size in new houses...its now paddocks with empty roads and will never be built on again...

I've had no need to talk about prepping with my rellies in NZ, as most of them are from Christchurch and now know all about making sure they have all sorts of stuff on hand in case of emergency. Some of them had so much damage to their houses that they have basically permanently bugged out to other cities, while others have filled their garages and workplaces with all sorts of preps (ie. pallet loads of bottled water, mega packs of wet wipes etc). I guess they would do fairly well with other emergencies now, although not sure about people in other parts of the country.

I just rewatched a UK dystopian movie from the mid-2000s called Children of Men. I remember being flummoxed by it first time I saw about a dozen years ago, but wasn't too moved this time until about halfway through (that may have been due to too much beer I drank beforehand though).
In the second half the imagery, filming etc is unreal. Dunno how realistic the fighting scenes were, but had to turn the volume down and re-watch several parts just to try to take it all in.
Helluva movie to watch if you have a couple of hours free.

"THE POSTMAN" it's all you'll ever need! Actually while running away with my mouth I've been seriously negligent! There are two others that must be part of this Post Apoc Cinematic Package and they are:- Mad Max 2 and A Boy and His Dog

The 1970's Charlton Heston flicks 'Omega Man' and 'Soylent Green' are worth a look.
