Planning a quiet weekend at home watching a few movies, so thought I would see what peoples favourite prep/survival related films were. A couple of mine:
- Into the Wild
- The Road
- Dawn of the Dead (new version)

They aren't my favourites, but prep/survival films include any of the chick flicks that Mrs Pete enjoys. They take a lot of mental preparation before the ordeal of watching them, and not dying of boredom by the end is a feat of survival in its own right.

Do documentaries count? This was one of the first prepper videos I watched and it opened my eyes as to what could happen if society collapsed in any scenario. You only have to look at cyclone Katrina and I often wonder were these unfortunate people used as guinea pigs to see how society would react but on a much bigger scale. These people were herded into that stadium with little water or food, no bathroom facilities, oppressive heat, rotting bodies, polluted and receding waters with every disease known. There were rapes, murders, bashings and many little children were sexually molested. Society at its worse.
AFTER ARMAGEDDON.

I like that little spot of Karma when he helps that guy on the roadside.

Yeah I like that moment, however I do wonder about the guy surviving the head wound, only for someone to later die from a cut on their finger. Great doco though.

I thought the new dawn of the dead was pretty ok, talks about collecting survival gear etc.
Myself, I prefer to go back a bit in history and look at sieges from the middle ages. That is where you are going to find long term survival techniques.
I also prefer to study castle building and garrison building from the middle ages as well. These show you about how much storage you need for long term off the grid, how to build defences against hordes.
I have a couple of castles that I really like, Leeds castle being one. and I cannot remember the name of it, but it was built by Richard I in France is another one I like.

No Blade of Grass, from 1970 . Based on pretty much my favorite book of all time, The Death of Grass, 1956. All grass crops die. Global famine. Civilisation collapse, set in Britain. Bugging out, questionable alliances, being forced to choose between evil and more evil.....
Besides, everyone loves the Hero to have an eyepatch......

The best "survival" movies IMHO are the Red Dawn movies, both the 1984 (Cubans and Russians) and the newer 2010s one (North Korean and Russia I think).
These movies are about a group of kid who escape into the hills after an invasion. After seeing their townspeople killed (especially their parents) for helping "guerillas" they decide they will take the fight to the invaders.
A little over the top with action but itis good to see the characters grow from school kids to fighters, the struggle they have over looking at the people they have known their whole lives being massacred and their own struggles with what they are doing.

Watched the Rover last night, 10 years after economic collapse in Australia, was filmed in the Flinders ranges! As depressing as the Road was the Rover was senseless. The whole movie you are waiting for some touches of humanity from the main character, occasionally you see them and feel he hasn't totally lost his human side. While the main character in the Road hardly ever uses his weapon, the main character in the Rover uses his weapon a lot. Both of these films are great in that the characters are not portrayed as the types of heroes we get from other films, in fact they are not heroes at all and don't really try to be, too busy surviving. You don't really find out until the end why the character is doing what he does!
The Road = Depressing The Rover = Senseless
Both these films really do away with the "We need a hero", genre which is great!

Really want to see the Rover, cannot wait to see the Rover.

Just watched After the Dark, quite a good movie, it goes through a nuclear scenario where there are 21 people and only 10 spots in a bunker, it is done in the context of a philosophy class playing out the scenario with new information each time around.
Low budget but i found it quite thought provoking listening to their rationals as to why they chose each person.
