So we recently cleaned out our car to prepare for selling it, and the amount of crap that came out of it is ridiculous - literally 2 washing baskets full of stuff... apparently I've been chucking stuff in there 'just in case' and haven't given though to what is actually useful, what should stay in there permanently, and the ease of carrying it if I had to take the gear and the kids and abandon the car.
So, I'm starting fresh and going to plan it properly this time, and I'd love to hear about what you have in your car (right now*) to inspire me.
*I know we've covered this in various threads before, but hit me with an update!

I literally just made a list for my car this morning,
Flashlight, spare batteries, first aid kit, spare clothing, blanket, spare parts and a tool box for basic repairs and mechanics, chains/ropes for tie downs and of course my edc comes with me covers most bases. I found I had so much junk in mine too.
Good post keen to find out what I should add.

FAK, multitool, torch, bottled water (regularly rotated, especially in summer or if the car is parked in the sun), picnic blankets, waterproof jacket, street directories (Perth metro, WA towns, plus tracks & trails around the state). I also have a handheld CB radio as it's been handy more than a few times to find what the problem is when stuck in traffic. A box of tissues, a couple rolls of dunny paper. Some ropes, straps & occys in case I use the roof racks and/or a trailer. I'm also re-doing a GHB (plus one for Mrs Pete), so that will have all sorts of goodies. Of course there's also the normal car stuff - spare wheel, jack & tools, etc. I think that's about it.

Thanks for the lists guys, just realised I don't have a torch in there! I had ended up with 3 pairs of shoes for the toddler, but no torch *facepalm* So, my goal is to have enough stuff in my car that we can walk home safely (not including all the gear that's in my handbag/nappy backpack), or overnight somewhere if we get stuck. Here's my list so far (keeping in mind I have a baby & a toddler): - Water
- Snacks
- Nappies
- Wipes
- Clothes:
- jackets
- pjs
- hats
- shoes
- socks
- warm set
- cool set
- Backpack/s
- Sunscreen
- Paw paw cream
- 1st Aid kit
- Baby 1st Aid
- Toilet paper
- Tissues
- Torch
- Multitool
- Emergency ponchos
- Umbrella x 2
- Picnic blanket
- Plastic bags
- Pen & notebook
- Towels
- Emergency space blankets
- Comfort toys
- books
- teething toy
- colouring pencils & paper
Ugh such a huge list! At least some of the stuff I can put in those space saving vacuum bags. Hit me with your feedback - no need to be gentle

What is paw paw cream? I'm guessing it isn't cream for paws...

What is paw paw cream? I'm guessing it isn't cream for paws... HAHA! I should have written 'pawpaw ointment.' This stuff is amazing, you can use it on chapped lips, nappy rash, bites, chafing etc. Awesome multi-use cream.

I'm sure the boss lady has heard of it. Could be worthwhile.
Another thing I should get in the car is tea-tree ointment. I first discovered it when I burned myself when checking oil in the car. It also works a treat with insect bites, and I'm told its a good fungicide. That could be handy if a long bug out on foot comes into play.

Yeah good call, I've got tea tree in my medicine cabinet and I *think* there's some in the FAK as well.

I have a large plastic tub in the back of the Prado - water (4l which is changed regularly, 3 days food, gas cooker and 4 cannisters, FAK x 2, cooking utensils, salt/pepper/herbs/coffee/tea/sugar/powdered milk & condensed milk etc, plastic bags, fry pan, 2 x emergency ponchos, torch x 2, fire extinguisher, hunting knife, collapsible fishing rod/tackle box, 25m rope, tool box, tie downs, tarp, bungee straps, anti bacterial soap and hand wash, plus a few odds and ends - kids books, & toys for them to play with, mags for the cook.
And that's what I can remember - I'm sure there is more in the tub I can't remember without pulling it all apart - probably should and replenish some items.

Small torch with 2 boxes spare batteries hand held UHF mini binoculars pens, sharpies FAK (see my vehicle FAK thread) tie down straps spare sunnies umbrella
This is everyday stuff
For long road trips I'll have enough water for the trip plus a bottle or 2 extra food/snacks and on my phone I'll have rest stops/fuel stops planned out on my GPS

Great thread, allot of the good ones have been said but I always carry spare fuses and bulbs. One replacement at least for everything, as well as a few relays would be ideal. A length of 15-30 amp insulated copper wire is also always handy. Duct tape and heavy duty fabric tape (100 mile an hour or gorilla tape) cable ties too. These are all great things to have, you can jerry rig almost anything if you really improvise and am prepared to strip a non essential system of the car to keep another going.
Also I like to carry a puncture repair kit and a 12v air compressor, one of those cans of tire repair stuff would be handy for someone less mechanically inclined too. I always start with what are the bare essentials to keep my car on the road or to limp home with and expand from that to luxury items, preferably I'd like to keep the car going rather then turn it into shelter while I wait for help.

In the back I keep a 10L jerry can, toolbox, oil, removable roof racks, air compressor, rope, torch, tomahawk, crowbar and rags.
Inside the car I have a backpack with a change of clothes, towel, blanket, torch, emergency blanket, glow sticks, zip ties, lighter and a mess tool. Outside of the bag are three water bottles which are usually half empty or less, toilet paper, matches, lighter, peanuts, jerky, first aid kit and phone/ipod chargers. And in the driver's side door I keep hand sanitiser, a small torch, pen, knife/escape tool and a small notebook.

I'll soon get a tub to keep most of it in, as atm all the smaller stuff fits into the many storage compartments in my boot. and will add a few more things..
Fire extinguisher 15m or rope (kernmantle climbing rope that I got in the garage) Spray jackets for the family Long life energy food Knife (only reason I don't keep this now is in case the car is searched and I have to explain why I have a hunting knife in the car, but buried in a tub at the back will be better) Bottles of water Boating flares Zippie ties Duck(t) tape (see below ) Several rolls toilet paper as well as spare box tissues

I'm so glad I restocked my car kit on Sat, on my way to mackay this morning I wiped out a big eastern grey and had to use my packed zip ties and duct tape to patch the car back together. Maybe hopefully it doesn't get written off, because it's under finance so I won't get much money from it and will have to reloan again to buy another :,(
